Hundred Thousand Naira Fixed Price To Marry A Wife In Benue State...

Well, not really fixed but you cannot exceed N100k..you hear?LOL

The traditional ruler of Otukpa, the headquarters of Ogbadibo LGA of Benue, Chief Sir Sunday Ekele Jp has banned intending groom in the community from spending more than N100, 000 on traditional wedding.

According to Chief Ekele, the decision became imperative following complaints from young men in the community that outrageous bride price has been discouraging them from getting married.

Speaking on a live programme monitored on Joy FM, Otukpo on Thursday, the monarch said any one found flaunting the new law would be penalized.

“Money should not prevent anyone from getting married in our community. From now onward, no one should spend more than hundred thousand naira before he gets a wife in our community. We need to encourage the young men so they won’t be scared of going into marriage,” he said.

Recall that the Chairman, Tiv Area Traditional Council led by the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty, Ochivirigh, Prof. James Ayatse had recently set up a 15-member committee to do something about the high bride price and expensive burial requirements for burial rites in Tiv land.

The committee, which has three months to submit its report, is headed by His Royal Highness, Chief Jam Gbinde Ter Ikyor, and had been directed to investigate the reasons for the high bride price and recommend ways of addressing the challenge.

    1. Yes orubebe, they are trying to abolish slave trade. Some families use pride price as a source for eradicating poverty in most part of nigeria.

  3. So if you wanna go all the way out on your traditional wedding you shouldn't exceed 100k, or just they are talking about just the dowry?

  4. It's wrong to impose a limit on bride price. What the chief should have done is to incorporate groom price into the traditional wedding.

The groom price must equal the bride price.

  5. This aint good news...the 'bride price' custom should be abolished! It simply means all female children in Nigeria are being sold! It is sad!!!

    1. Yorubas always return the bride price saying they don't sell their daughters. So not everyone encourages this slave trade tradition
. You even find women from certain parts loving being paid for by a man. The mentality

  12. One Hundred Thousand Naira is too much for Bride price. My family used to collect Fifty Naira just to fulfil that obligation. When l asked my Grandfather about it he said, " I don't want a situation where girls in the family will remain married traditionally to someone and cannot move on because of money" That made a lot of sense. Fast forward to 1998, my Grandfather had passed on and a Cousin who wanted to get married cried so much for the amount to be increased because her In Laws will make fun of her. A family meeting was held and maintaining the old Man's principle, all Bride price was pegged at 5,000 Naira. I went home in 2001 from the US and my Bride price was 5,000. Same amount for all my Sisters and Cousins till date. When the Males in our family get married, we are shocked at the amounts they ask for but hey, to each his own. Whoever wants to sell their daughters should continue. A lot of Women are trapped in marriage s because of inability to return the dowry. In some instances, especially when the Bride's Father is deceased, l have seen too that the Uncles ask for a huge amount just to frustrate the Bride who they never lifted a finger to help through School.
