Salesgirl Docked For Stealing N553.9m From Shoprite

A salesgirl, Mariam Mufutau, who allegedly stole N553, 956, 000 from Shoprite stores in Eti-Osa, Lagos, was on Friday charged before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

She is standing trial on a two -count charge of stealing.

According to the police, the N553.9 million was the proceeds of sales realised by Mufutau one month after she secured employment in the firm.

Police prosecutor, Esther Adesulu, informed the court in charge No: J/38/2017 that the defendant committed the alleged offence between April and May, 2017 at Shoprite Stores, Eti-Osa, during working hours.Adesulu alleged that the defenfant failed to remit the money into her employer’s account.

She said the company’s management uncovered the fraud when they audited their accounts.

The offence, she added, was punishable under sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate O.O Owunmi granted her bail in the sum of N300, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case till July 28.

The Nation

*Unfortunately most sales people always fall into temptation if they are handling cash, that is why The Netherlands is almost running a cashless society..If you dont have a credit card you cannot go shopping there....

Last time i was in Rotterdam,I couldnt even buy a bottle of water at the train station with cash..So frustrating!

    2. 10:39....i think you are right

Haba.. How can only a junior staff.. Sales girl steal all that amount of money?

Meaning, there is no proper Segregation of duties..... The sales girl should have who she report to after duty

Is it that, they don't balance their account after every day's work?

Is it that, there is not Inventory taking?

      I don't get mbok

This story is all faces of misconstrued. 500m? Let me ask. How often do the staff switch? I doubt one person works the full work hours all week all day. When they switch, don't they tender accounts? Okay,500m. How did she get hold of such money? Cash? Where she dey harbor the cash for a month? She put am for toto ni? Her Toto na bottomless pit? For sure,ATM payments can never get to her. They should tell true true if na money or commodities wey she tif. Abi if na 553k wey dem do mistake add plenty zeros.

  16. She can't be the only thief of this money

  17. SDK don't make excuses for her, a thief is a thief. Is she the only one handling cash there? She's criminally minded & she ought to pay the price for her crime

    ReplyDelete
  18. Total rubbish. N500m? One sales staff? The whole shop does not make N500m in a month. This story lacks credibility

    ReplyDelete
  19. It's possible that the total money that did not reconcile was 500M, as it was revealed by audit. But I think that the girl is being made a scape goat for ALL the total sum of monies missing. It's possible the sum is even higher, because those Shopright staff never give me my complete change if I pay by cash.
