Chronicle Of Blog Visitor Narrative...

HMMMM.....

STAND ALONE NARRATIVE

FOLLOWING A PASSION

Hi Stella, thanks for creating this amazing platform.I have been a blog visitor for so long a time.I still comment as anonymous though.

Now to Everyone,I need your input to make a decision now.I am a medical student who has never for one day imagined herself as a practising.

Nothing about it fascinates me at all,i am not so sure how much I can stand blood and all of that.Surprised? That's the story of my life.

My parents are highly placed and established in the medical field,so I know out of good intentions to get me a brighter future, they pushed me in here without knowing it.My brother never liked sciences and they pushed him in there hoping he will study medicine and all hopes were dashed when he blatantly refused, they tried everything to get him to study it with severe rough handling but he refused and they sort of black listed him and shifted the attention to me.

After the episodes,i didn't need to soothsayer to tell me what they wanted from me already. My parents are strict, its their way or nothing but I wasn't complaining,i was young and bright in class and it's the normal Nigerian way that you will do sciences and so I did.

Along the line,I started getting interested in mass communication(i just loved anything that will make me address a crowd, inspire people with speech, television presenting) but out of fear I held it back, completed secondary school and immediately got admission to study medicine. But this exactly where my problem lies.

I got into school, and started getting involved in somethings I loved doing.I started so the medicine won't bore me throughout my stay in school and hopefully acquire enough skills to get in full time after medical school and so through recommendations and recommendations someone approached me with an offer.

He is working with a group of people to create a YouTube channel and according to him, they are not a low budget because he wants something that will meet up with the likes of the best online TV and already have headline sponsors on it,so they want me to take up a segment.

At first I was excited about the offer because it will give me an opportunity to improve,it is really not about what they will pay to me now,and I checked what they wanted and it doesn't take me out of the state my school is within, once a week, about three hours of my time for a each production.

My problem right now is, after the incident with my brother,my parents have their eyes on me.For that single reason,i have decided to get that mbbs degree for them, but even without being told,i know am required to just promote the channel, it's not something I can do hiding, especially with the way they want the channel,my parents are not the type you can sit with and have a decent conversation. They will never understand and I am sure they will see everything as a distraction and ask me to quit.

I am really scared about how they will see the development,i just feel like many of them including other relations are looking out for me because of my parents.Just imagine,my uncle even told my dad to tell me to go off social media because I don't need distractions as a medical student

.Everyone is just on my matter, you know when they say the whole world is waiting for the manifestation of the sons of God.They are indeed waiting for me and so am just having mixed feelings about how people will react.

On other side, the producer is calling for my reply,so we can get a stance on one or two things and begin productions next week.Everyone thinks i have been studying the course with joy in my heart.I don't know if this is supposed to be an opportunity for me overlook and finish school first,or pick it as a blessing.I am 300level by the way and with the grace of God,i have been doing very very well in school till date.

I am sure we have people that have been trapped in between profession and passion on this blog, please I need your input, Stella your red pen will be useful too.Thank you.

*My dear forget the distraction now and face your studies..you can do all that later....Take inspiration from Actresses and media personalities who have now dumped their medical degrees for the Arts.

Finish your degree first and all other things will fall into place......
I am a parent and this is the same advice i would want anyone giving my kids.

    1. Well, I think you should follow your passion. From what u explained, it's not to take too much from you such that u don't balance up in school, as per u are bright.

Now understand u would have to put in more time into ur studies really. And hope they know u are a med student.

As for ur parents, truely, shift them oneside first, because we are first ourselves, before we are children. At the end of life, or when u look retrospectively, u'd understand dat nothing beats fulfilling ur own purpose, and having inner satisfaction.

I also hope, u can pull out when d need arises.

All d best dear. 2nd MB is calling you

    2. Stella's advice is the best dear. Finish first with good grades, once you're independent you can delve into something else. In this case, your passion.

    3. I am a medical doctor and I wish I did other things whilst in medical school, in fact I wish I could say I studied this for my parents so I can rasily start doing other things, 3hours a week is not too much time to do your production and still bag your mbbs. By the time you graduate you ll discover mbbs na for mouth, doctors are diversifying some doing taloring, catering to make ends meet. In fact specialising in courses they never had interest in just yo keep moving. For me I say pursue your passion along side your degree.

    4. Follow your passion girl.. 3 times a week will not make you fail. Promote it as much as you want
When you.parents find out, tell them you love doing it and that it won't affect yoir studies.
I have seen young medical doctors in Ghana hosting a talk show. They demystify myths about medicine, they talk about issues bothering viewers and they educate viewers on sex education and other illnesses..
They make it such a lively and interactive show. You can tell they have a passion for TV.
Follow yoir passion but don't drop.out of school.
May my kids be able to talk to me about anything.

    5. Finish school please. I dont like Law, i studied it. Aced it. Did a masters. Aced it. And now i work at the best place you can imagine (government-wise). Now i have the time, resources and freedom to do every other thing i want. Im starting my Phd in january...and yes, in Law. Its opening doors i didnt think possible. So darling, finish school. Greatness has no time limit. If its really your passion you will acheive it...even in 5, 6 or 10 years.

Some things are not certain, what if d channel doesn't turn out to be how u expect and doesn't take u far like you thing. I'm d entertainment industry, you'll get a lot of distractions. Be focused, don't bring enemity between you and your parents oo

    1. I am a medical doctor. Poster, do both. Do not be all those boring doctors that faced only book throughout their 6 years medical school. They were actually not all the best in exams in med sch and some are having difficulties in the outside world. This doesn't sound like it will take much time, in fact it sounds like a hobby you will get back paid for. Pls grab it. If you notice your results deteriorate, then you rest. And y r u telling your parents? This is a hobby, it doesn't have to come up at all. The best doctors with distinctions in my set played ball representing d school, modelled far and wide. While some will read oooooo and barely cross d finish lines

  5. Opportunity comes once. Parents don't know the future. When you succeed now they'll be happy. Find out how much the show will pay. Take the money and keep well. It better be enough for rent because the worst ur parents will do is say they won't pay for school or rent if you don't do their wishes . Do the pyoutbe thing. It's only once a week. Make sure you keep your grades up.

  6. I am a medical doctor but left practice about a decade ago to pursue my passion and develop my talent.
You can be anything but girl, my candid advice is to cool down, give up that youtube stuff and face the demands of MBBS. get your degree and take it up from there.
Perhaps, you'd find an nice man to marry and be off your parents "hook". Get to like a year diploma in journalism training and get your career in journalism kicked off.
Personally, I never enjoyed practice for the period I did and I was just being suffocated by the things budding inside me. I thank God that I read medicine, he works all things for the good of they that love him. I am good where I am.

    Be careful with marriage.
Make sure a man isn't coming to marry "a doctor" else you are set up for more "wahalas" to come.
With a degree in medicine and little training in broadcasting, you can get a job as a medical correspondent for a news company like Sanjay Gupta is in CNN. It can be a news company in another African country just be ready to explore.
If you make a mistake in marriage, you would have opened two war fronts; parents and husband and there will be no place to hide.

  10. Poster I will urge you to finish your degree first practice for a while,by then you have made them think you are with them then After a while, you can pursue your dreams.Age is still on your side, don't rush it please.Wishing you best of luck.

  11. I even thought you were done with school and talking about your passion.

Having being close to medical students and knowing how tense and crazy their curriculum is I'll advice you graduate first then pursue your passion.

Aunt Landa is a surgeon ,a motivational speaker/radio host, has an Ngo,a chef ,a fashionista and there are other people like her out there too.

I also know a medical doctor that after his house job went straight for business,I always tease him not to dare prescribe even Vit C for anyone cos I'm sure he doesn't remember anything.Just like you he was forced to study medicine ,the only thing he did to compensate his people was to marry a doctor.

My dear you still have a long way to go,so keep your dream alive but for now study study study!!!

Your parents are still paying your fees and won't listen to you.when you start making your cash they won't stop you from pursuing your dreams.

    All the best dear.

    1. Poster finish your studies and then face your passion later. It's that simple. Not every opportunity is an opportunity, some tae just there to put us into more problems. It might not require a lot from you at the state, but as they grow, it will require much from you and your studies will suffer. I already know how your course is, very stressful something and you want to add this? Please stop and face your books. After that you can decide to be whoever you want. I know people who read me decide but do more than 3 other things.

  12. Poster, face your studies and finish your degree first. What you're about to get yourself into might seem easy for now; but it's a big distraction for you.

You have a parents that want the best for you even though they pushed you to study a course you didn't like but you're doing very well (according to you ) so far, try and finish your studies then you can now go into entertainment or whatever else you wish to do.

In your line of field, you can still be on tv and addressed a lot of people. You can work on tv, i've seen a lot of doctors who only find a tv work that suits their profession. Some even diverse into other fields but, they still work on tv.

My dear, don't give in to cheap distraction.

  14. This was me in medical school in Nigeria. I read medicine part time. 50% of my time was devoted to missionary work and that is where I eventually settled. I am fulfilled.
It is a wrong thing parents do in Nigeria; thinking that medicine is a way to escape poverty and have a secured future. A lot of people miss/bury great talents.

Please since you've started medical school, carry on and play along with your parents for they pay the bills. Afterwards, while you work, you can use some spare time to do some journalism courses even online etc. Then veer off and find your niche. It may involve taking a dive to the "unknown". You may earn less. But there is nothing like a peace of mind and fulfillment; just knowing that your are where God has blessed you with talent is soothing.

  18. It's good to have a passion, although I see so much pressure from your parents. If you been on the channel won't push you to fail or get distracted, do it in SECRET. If your parents find out, tell them you are doing it and not failing, convince them that if by mistake you fail, you will drop the channel distraction and face your studies. Till then, beg them to give you a chance...that's when they FIND OUT o!

  19. I find this refreshing at least it's not husband or boyfriend issue. Poster if taking up the segment will be your safe haven from medicine, please do!! . You need that break to do something that makes you happy. Use your 'good grades 'as leverage against your parents. You need to breathe mehnn ,make sure it doesn't disrupt your academics .you can even talk to the producer and turn the segment to a health issue program ,that way you are doing something related to your course.I don't like to talk about my personal life here but when I was in school ,I once left school to another country to shoot a Comercial ,only my brother knew, my parents got to find out 6 months later when they saw it at the airport ,my excuse was I needed the money to buy books since the one they sent wasn't enough. Not telling you to rebel against your parents but there are certain decisions and actions ,risks you need to take now that will prepare you for adulthood and assuming responsibilities alone.

That's what I did. My parents forced me to study medicine yet I wanted to do law. I studied medicine, graduated top of my class and gave them the degree. It wasn't easy. Plus I did it out of anger.

Immediately after I started my law degree. I did not speak to my parents for 7yrs. It was a very tough period in my life, but I told them that they wanted the medical degree yet I wanted Law.

Four more years and you're done. Even if You want to switch to mass comm it will still be the same 4 years you will need. You wanna do entertainment? There will always be opportunities. It won't end at this youtube channel thingy. Shebi that kiki omeili of Lekki wives too is a trained doctor turned actress. You can explain to them after you have the certificate in your hand and then go on to follow your passion.

My advice is, leave the YouTube stuff for now and focus on your academics. There'll be enough time for that when you graduate. Remember the higher you go the tougher it becomes so don't let these early years in medical school fool you.

As a compromise I suggest you continue with the other stuff you've been doing so far so that you won't get completely bored, but don't take on any serious media commitments for now. All the best.

  31. This used to be very common in Nigerian homes,I'm surprised they are still doing it.
They target the kids that are versatile.. Scoring 90-100% in both science and Arts subjects. They automatically conclude you can do well in sciences and categorize/share siblings.

Since you are already in school, focus and finish up.
Then if you still can't find passion for what you studied... Let your parents swallow the bitter pill.
You obviously cannot practice feeling this way...

PS: There are Radio/Tv shows focused on medical doctors and their practice. There are also very attractive IG accounts been run by Young, beautiful doctors talking about Health,Fashion,The Environment and Lifestyle. Look into that and expand on Youtube.
You can combine your practice with Tv appearances too.

Follow your passions but follow wisely, as a medical student I was a makeup artist, nail technician and even started learning tailoring on the side, but when it was time for exams I learnt to drop the distractions, my parents knew this and weren't worried at all, in the future you'll learn to see your medical degree as not a burden but a plus to whatever you want to do, even now when I finished housejob, the beauty of it is that I was able to use my housejob money to plug back into my makeup business, bit the expensive products and gadgets I could not afford and not have to chase PP up and down medicine is not even a restricted course there are so many things you can do with it, so many places you can work or practice, don't limit yourself, to me I can't even imagine not practicing after all I suffered to get my degree.
