International Day Of The Disappeared: NHRC Asks FG To Tackle Increasing Cases Of Missing Persons

The International Day of the Disappeared on August 30 of each year, is a day created to draw attention to the fate of individuals imprisoned at places and under poor conditions unknown to their relatives and/or legal representatives.

Worried by the increasing spate of missing persons in the country, the National Human Rights Commission has called on the federal government and other relevant stakeholders to dissipate more energy and resources towards tackling cases of kidnapping and abduction of people as Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the 2017 International Day for the disappeared.

This year’s remembrance is coming on the heels of a proposed launch of a pilot project on the establishment of a database on missing persons in three states across the country namely: Borno, Benue and Rivers. The project which is designed to test run the database in these states will register cases of persons who went missing as a result of different circumstances like conflict, migration, crime and other situations of violence.

  2. Barracudianusaurusunamon - Now, this is great news, my question is: "when will this be enacted?", we need a country-wide awareness done, and programmes like these should be taken seriously by our leaders and other top-country philanthropists.

Great work anyway, I believe we will be able to achieve what is needed and reduce the number of missing or displaced persons.

    cheers.
