Ojukwu's Son Says Buhari is wrong, Nigeria’s unity negotiable

Emeka Ojukwu Jr., a legal practitioner and son of Igbo leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, has disagreed with President Muhammadu Buhari’s comments that Nigeria’s unity is not negotiable.

Buhari made the statement while addressing the country last Monday.

Ojukwu, in an interview with Punch, claimed that Nigeria is “a product of negotiations”.

He said: “I don’t think the tone of finality in the President’s speech is right. I have always said Nigeria is a product – a child – of negotiations. It is a child of negotiations in that when they started the agitation for the country’s independence — Zik (Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe) from the Igbo side, Chief Anthony Enahoro from South-West, and (Ahmadu Bello) the Sardauna from the North — they were all going to London.

“They had problems but they patched their differences and, ultimately, without firing a gunshot, the British government gave independence to Nigeria.

“For somebody to wake up and say ‘there are no negotiations’ is not in line with the fact that an agreement is susceptible to review and renegotiations. Since it is not really possible to see the future or what will happen in 50 years, agreements are subject to review and negotiations.

“An agreement over time requires reviewing or renegotiations. So, if we are all pleased with it, there will be no pocket of agitations or discontent. But the pocket of discontent and agitation is a throwback showing that we are having problems with implementation (of the agreement to remain as a country), thus calling for renegotiation. In that regard, it is important that everybody should be carried along.

“What I don’t like is a situation whereby the government sponsors people. As of the time they were convoking the last national conference, it was my view that the Federal Government should not pay the delegates.

“I suggested that each ethnic nationality should choose and sponsor a delegate to the confab; you submit your interest under a bigger umbrella; once all views are gathered, then we will harmonise them and look for the best way to implement them. The reason why we are having problems is that people believe that the constitution we are using was at no time agreed on. They feel that it was the military that gave us what we have now.”

  1. Thank you for clearing the air and for taking a stand.

Buhari indirectly used a private discussion he had as a private citizen of this country with Ojukwu as a binding factor for all igbo's.

This i believe is unethical and politically unacceptable.

Nigerias unity is ALWAYS NEGOTIABLE and if they don't buy into the idea of restructuring peacefully then it would be forced down their throats violently.

Nigeria must be equitable to all ethnic groups for us to survive as one country.😀😀😀

    1. Every advanced democracy do have constitutional review. Buhari says Nigeria that doesn't even have a real constitution is non-negotiable.
Truth is Buhari is an evil sadist and the worst bigot of our time. His sad soul has destroyed Nigeria and he will never know peace.

    3. No truer words have even been said than this
Our unity is negotiable. And they need to listen to the voice of the people in order to take right steps at all times. Don't wait until the center can no longer hold

  5. Yea he's right. For as long as the Hausa Fulanis continue to view themselves as first amongst equals despite their natural and unnatural backwardness; for as long as the Yorubas continue to consider themselves intellectually more superior than others when they know next to nothing; for as long as the Igbos continue to cry wolf over nothing, and for as long as the minor and major minorities continue to think they've been welded into this union to remain serfs forever, then we must re-negotiate the terms of this union.

    2. THANK YOU!!!.. Buhari needs to take his ego aside and really listen. This agitation s coming left and right needs to be addressed!. Or else tomorrow will give birth to crisis!

The Biafra thing has already eaten deep and needs to be addressed objectively biko. This nation is facing so many challenges. Accusations flying every where. People think that others are favoured more than them. We need to go back to the drawing board!. Let everything be re visited!. Nnamdi kanu has woken something that might not be quashed easily like that. What if he's jailed the second time and riot break out?. All these supporters of him are crazy!. And the arewa groups react? It's almost the beginning of war now.

Let's keep our personal differences, egos and unnecessary hate aside. Welcome a dialogue and sort these issues once and for all.

Each time I remember how these politicians are playing with our national unity, and the fact that poor man will suffer this impeding doom being taken for granted, while the rich will scatter for safety, i worry!!.

The Nigeria Biafra war almost started like this. The leader from north and the leader from East.
