Police Versus Youth Clash in Owerri Market Protest Leaves Three Dead

ABOUT three persons have been reportedly killed as traders and youths of Ekeukwu market in Owerri, the Imo State capital clashed with security operatives over directives given by the state government on the relocation of the market.

The incident occurred this morning when the state government moved in to start the demolition of the market which is to be effected by security operatives. The clash became heavy as gunshots were heard by residents in the neighborhood.

The situation escalated when one of the protesters, a young man, was hit and killed by a stray bullet fired by security operatives deployed to maintain order in the melee which ensued after the demolition.

But the State Commissioner of Police has interfered in the matter to restore peace.

The market relocation has been a major issue between the Imo state government and traders of the market as well as some indigenes of Owerri who see the location of the market as their ancestral home.

The traders rejected the move and have taken the state government to court over the issue.

Yesterday, the Imo state Governor issued a press statement signed by the Deputy Chief of Staff Operations, Kingsley Uju, stating that traders in the market should move out within 48 hours after the release of the statement.

  2. If the government did issue sufficient time (not 48 hours pls)and an alternative spot for relocation then the traders crossed the lines of civil engagement by resisting the government. But if on the other hand the traders only got a 48hour notice, the government deserves a date in the court though I doubt the chances of the traders' victory.

    1. There was a court injunction restraining him from any demolition till the case is settled.with this in mind, people relaxed that he wouldn't do anything till the outcome of the court but he flouted the court ruling and did what he wanted.the boy on yellow top wasn't protesting but rather helping his mum pack their goods from their shop before being hit by the bullet

  5. Madam!! Look at how u reported this sad news like it was the imo people's fault. If it is AY/Diamond bank you will bring out yourself well to criticise him/them. Dont you know what a court order is? Okorocha is not above the law. You are biased with this Okorocha issue. Last time i sent a comment on how he used police and gun wielding hoodlums to drive out Alvan pensioners from their quaters you gladly used my comment for okro soup. SMH, i believed so much in you but after reporting this issue like this i have lost faith in u. I guess you are in okoroawusa's payroll.
