Pope Francis May Shut Down 163 Parishes Over Imo Catholic Crisis

Pope Francis is seriously considering total shut-down of the 163 parishes in Catholic Diocese of Ahiara in Imo State over the protracted crisis generated by appointment of Peter Okpalaeke as Bishop.

Okpalaeke’s appointment four years ago after the demise of Bishop Victor Chikwe has been vehemently resisted by Reverend Fathers of Mbaise extraction and the Laity, leading to a stalemate.

Ahiara Cathedral and the Bishop’s Court have remained under lock and key with nobody to administer Holy Communion ever since.

A key figure at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria confided in The Nation that the Pope would be left with no choice than to wield the big sticks if the stalemate continues.

The source said: “What is happening in Ahiala is a great affront unheard of in the history of Catholicism in Nigeria and Africa.

“Never has the appointment of a Bishop been this hotly contested. It is a shame and very embarrassing to the CSN and the Pope.”

He said since the gladiators have indicated they would not back down, the Pope might have to close down the 163 parishes in the Diocese.

    1. I dare him to close them. We can't be intimidated. Christ said, wherever u go in my name and they do not welcome u, wipe ur feet and walk away. Okpalaeke surely didn't read that part of the bible. He can never be the bishop of Ahiara. If he's a true servant of God, he should have told the pope to relieve him for the sake of church and peace. But he won't. Power hungry man. Schism is brewing and the pope should tread carefully.

    2. Anon8:50 you are very stupid. How dare you challenge the Pope? That part of the bible was talking about missionaries going to preach to unbelievers. How dare you reject a priest on assigned role to the service of the church based on tribalism. The church is catholic church and under the leadership of the Pope. He has critically analyzed the case and found that it was brewed by hate and tribalism and allowing such will only encourage more parishes to gang up against a bishop assigned to them. Why don't they obey the Pope for the sake of innocent church goers.
How can you soley reject an appointed bishop because he is not from Mbaise? Not even that he is non igbo? Are they even Christians? If it is possible, they all should be derobed. Bunch of political unbelievers. They must obey the Pope or be scrapped. How dare you question papal authority? They are free to start their own church.

    3. Anon 8:50, how come you forgot to quote what the bible said about Obedience. A case of Saul and Samuel. Saul did the right thing but the chief priest of God must be obeyed above all things. You must submit to the church authority.

  4. Closing the parishes might not be the best move. It just might lead to a further degeneration the rift in the church.

    1. That would be the best thing to do. Since Obasanjo levelled ODI, who has heard them disturb the govt again? He cannot allow them to chase an ordained bishop posted there. The Okpalaeke guy did not kill, rape, defraud or do anything unpriestly. His only crime was that he is not from Mbaise. What manner of rubbish? How can you claim to be a Christian that is lead by Jesus christ and then disobey him? They are catholic priests and must obey the Pope. Are they even crazy? Do they think it is Apc and Pdp? I am so pissed. Masses has not been taking holy communions because of this rubbish.
