Woman Donates Her Frozen Breast Milk To Harvey Survivors.

A mother in Missouri has helped out potentially hundreds of Texas children by donating 65 pints of breast milk to Hurricane Harvey's survivors.

Danielle Palmer of Owensville had an excess of bottled breast milk ready to serve up to her son, Truett - but when she saw the devastation in Texas she knew she had to help out other mothers.

Breastfeeding is hard. Whether you're pumping or feeding or however it may be, it's hard. And we are like momma bears. We protect one another.'

It's given us the opportunity to do other things, I mean had we not been in this situation, we wouldn’t be able to share some of our love with the babies in Houston.'

With breast feeding, stress plays a big role in your supply. If you become stressed, your supply will drop,' Palmer said.

Breast milk can last for up to six months once frozen, according to research.

Now the bottles - equivalent to eight gallons, and an estimated 364 feedings - is to be taken to Dallas.

Hmm... Stella, I used to feel the same way.but pray to God not to have issues at birth. I had my last baby prematurely with complications from both of us & the best they could do at that moment was the donor breast milk. I remember when I woke & was told..I can't even comprehend a white woman's milk for my baby. I did all I could to quickly start giving mine. But in all I appreciated their efforts it helps in moments like mine

Stella, I've heard of some grand Mums that breast feed their grand kids to support their busy daughter, depending on the situation.

Nice gesture though.

That is why there were wet nurses back in the days for rich ppl to breast feed their kids, that way their wives breasts won't go flat from suckling their young ones.

Yes it's hard for a mum to think about it. But, when I was small a neigbour passed on after childbirth. While her 'horseband' was running around trying to appease the village people ( cos he hadn't paid bride price) he handed over the baby to a neighbor-friend who just had hers 2 months ago. The neighbor did all the breastfeeding until the baby was 6 months. E be like say she use the breast take mourn her late friend.

I can let my sister breastfeed my child, very easily if we are breastfeeding at the same time. I can also breastfeed for a child in need. My cousin was driving in Abuja once and saw an abandoned baby struggling to stay alive after being dumped over night. As they brought the baby out of nylon bag you could tell the child was weak. She (having her baby in the back of their car) quickly asked to breastfeed the baby so that the child can even have energy to cry. Then she took the child to the police station afterwards.

My point is, in view of the situation this woman has done well. There are some 'annoying' babies that can't do anything other than breast milk esp when that's what their mothers have given them exclusively. How the mama wan take cope inside this situation? Esp if she's like me that my body shuts down under stress. It sounds disgusting yes.... but wait until you see a picky starving baby grab that milk and go sleep right after. Also, I'm sure she and the milk have been tested for all sorts.

Impossible, how can the grandmother be lactating too. Did she just give birth?

Any mother that want to donate normally go through test like, Hep B surface antigen,Hep C antibody,HIV antibody,Syphilis antibody,HTLV (Human T-lymphotropic virus)antibody.
The milk provides human milk to babies in the Special Care Baby Unit (if mothers are temporarily unable to meet their babies' needs).

Formula is actually made from cow milk which is not as nutritional as breast milk. Also babies that are not breastfed tend to have allergies and are susceptible to diseases when they get older. Some studies have even shown that babies who were not breastfed will be more prone to having mental and behavioral problems later in life.
As far as the donor mother is healthy and doesn't use any strong medications, any baby that sucks from her breast or of her milk is better off than taking formula. Babies also digest breast milk better than formula.
The only issue associated with a mother breastfeeding another person's child is mother-baby bonding. You call whoever nursed you "mother", whether or not the person is your real mother.

There's nothing wrong with it

Goes to show there is always a way to help if you don't have money. Everybody has something they can offer. Even some ladies of the night can offer their services to the stressed out rescuers to give them a moment of peace.

Anon 19:13 olodo, you think a gran mother will go through the stress of taking hormonal injection so she could feed her grandchild. A village grandma at that??? Your fabu no werk iyede.... Lol

Last line...that's the Koko.

To me, she has done the most. God bless her.

She might have been an exception and exceptions do not apply to most people. Any qualified ob/gyn or midwife will agree that breast milk is by far the safest and most nutritious food you can give to an infant.
When you do have your own children, please breastfeed them for as long as possible, if you can. Your children's long term health is far more important than your physique.

Nothing yulky about it. Read this on a facebook group called "Breastfeeding mama talk". The donor herself was the one who posted about it. Alot of people do donate cos there are babies who need them.

Sensa Greene said...

Not breastfeed per se. There's just put the nipple in the mouth of the baby to nibble and play with. I have friends that their mothers did this, so I understand Cynthia

Victoria said...

Ahh, you people prefer cow and goat milk...

Women have been helping newly born babies whose mum died at child birth, born prematurely or whose mum is infected to breastfeed in Nigeria, even before your ignorant self was born. It's better to keep shut if you ain't sure about the happenings in your country that open your mouth and sound stupid.

Choi! So many ignorant ladies in Nigeria. Tufuakwa. Awon slay empty heads.

Donor breastmilk in hospitals comes from breastmilk banks where the milk is tested first then pasteurized. Do NOT equate hospital breastmilk to milk taken directly from a nursing mother. They are different simply because of the processing which means there is absolutely no risk of your baby contracting a disease from the milk he/she gets in the hospital.

Anybody feeding their baby with another random woman's breastmilk that has not passed through the rigorous processing that happens in a breastmilk bank is playing Russian roulette with their baby's health.
