SPORTS TIT BITS

What do you know about sports?Ghanaman is here to tell you a thing or two...°!!!

TIGER WOODS

Tiger Woods revealed the agony of his prolonged absence from golf as he spoke ahead of his latest comeback at the Hero World Challenge, where he hopes to prove his troubles are behind him.

The 14-time major winner has endured a series of surgeries to combat his many injury problems and underwent another back operation in April.

It is nine months since the 41-year-old last played competitively, but he will tee it up alongside US PGA Championship victor Justin Thomas tomorrow as the headline act of a small but stellar field in the Bahamas.

And the American is relishing the prospect of getting back out on the course, having been in life-altering pain for much of the past two years.

Q: Can he reclaim his legendary shots?

BOXING

Fresh negotiations for Anthony Joshua to face Deontay Wilder were held this month and Matchroom Boxing chairman Barry Hearn remains hopeful the unification clash will be staged next year.

Joshua has urged his promotional team to fulfil his ambitions of fighting for all the heavyweight world titles and he is edging closer to a clash with WBO champion Joseph Parker in March or April.

WBC title holder Deontay Wilder has also been targeted by Joshua, the WBA 'Super' and IBF champion, and Hearn is optimistic this blockbuster bout can take place after holding recent talks with the American's advisor Shelly Finkel.

Q: Which do you wanna see…Joshua vs. Parker…OR…Joshua vs. Wilder?

SUPER EAGLES

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has been given a new two-year contract after guiding the country to the World Cup finals, the country’s football association announced yesterday.

“He has done very well and does not need to go into the World Cup uncertain of his future,” said Amaju Pinnick, president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The German coach has been in charge for 12 matches since taking over 15 months ago, recording seven wins, four draws and a defeat.

Nigeria, who have not gone further than the round of 16 in five previous World Cup finals, are hoping to avoid financial squabbles that have marred their previous participation in the tournament.

Q: Well deserved?

CAF

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be used at the Total 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco.

This was announced by the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) on their official website yesterday following a meeting by its Referees’ Committee on Monday in Cairo, Egypt.

The VAR was first used at the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup held in Japan.

It was also used at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup and 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Korea and Russia respectively.

Q: Is CAF courting controversy with this?

WORLD CUP LOGO

With just three days to go to the Final Draw for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in the Russian capital, the famed Moscow Metro held the unveiling of the last remaining visual icon of the event.

For the 2018 issue of the Official Poster, the renowned Russian artist Igor Gurovich chose legendary Soviet goalkeeper Lev Yashin as a central figure of his work.

“The Official Poster of the 2018 FIFA World Cup is a true reflection of Russia’s artistic and football heritage,” commented FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura. “We are very proud of this beautiful landmark asset that portrays such an important icon and celebrates the coming tournament on Russian soil.”

Yashin played in four FIFA World Cups – 1958, 1962, 1966 and 1970 – and remains the only goalkeeper in the history of football to win the Ballon d’Or.

ITALY

Italy legend Gianluigi Buffon eased some of his World Cup heartache by winning the Serie A Best Player of the Year award at the Gran Gala del Calcio Awards in Milan.

“The failure to participate in the World is the biggest disappointment in my career together with some (lost) Champions league finals,” said the 39-year-old Juventus goalkeeper at Monday night’s ceremony.

Napoli’s Maurizio Sarri was named the best coach in the Italian football awards.

Buffon quit international football last month as four-time champions Italy sensationally missed out on their first World Cup finals in 60 years after a playoff defeat to Sweden.

It is the sixth straight year that a Juventus player has won the award as he follows Andrea Pirlo (2012 - 2014), Carlos Tevez (2015) and Leonardo Bonucci (2016).

Q: Pity party for Buffon?

AC MILAN

Gennaro Gattuso is excited after being handed his "dream" job as AC Milan head coach, and the Rossoneri favourite is adamant there is nowhere better to be involved in football than the place he calls "paradise".

The former Milan and Italy star was promoted from his role leading the Primavera youth team following the dismissal on Monday of Vincenzo Montella.

Montella was sacked due to the team's underwhelming start to the campaign, which came after a period of heavy spending in the off-season.

Gattuso, who played for the club between 1999 and 2012, will be tasked with improving Milan's fortunes, as they sit seventh in Serie A following a 0-0 draw with Torino on Sunday.

Q: Do you see Milan’s fortunes changing for good?

  1. I don't see Tiger woods reclaiming his legendary title
I want to watch Joshua vs wilder
Nigeria have really impressed me though we are not there yet.
Caf make I quiet small for that one
Ac Milan I doubt but hope something new comes out

I hope and pray that Tiger gets back to his invincible form.
Parker looks easy on paper,he will make a good tune up for AJ for
a possible unification bout with Wilder.
Gernot Rohr deserves the contract renewal. At least it will put him and the team in a good stead going into the World Cup.
I think CAF should hold off on the VAR pending the time the rough edges will be smoothed out.
In the area of arts the Russians are no pushovers,so one should expect nothing less than a mind blowing visual icon.
Aside from winning the Scudetto and getting to the UCL final.2017 is a rather unforgettable year for Gigi Buffon.
AC Milan needs to address some fundamental issues otherwise Gattuso might just go the way of Inzaghi and Seedorf.

  5. This is Anthony Joshua season and I know he won't mess it up.
Gernot Rohr has really proved himself to be in charge of the super eagles unlike some that came to chop and clean mouth. The guy that coached us during south Africa world cup.
I call him general Gattuso, wishing him all the best.
