Amtrak Derailment in Washington State Leaves 3 Dead And Hundreds Injured

At least three people were killed and more than 100 injured when an Amtrak passenger train derailed in Washington state, DuPont Fire Chief Larry Creekmore said Monday night.

The Amtrak Cascades 501 was making its first trip on a new service route when the train ran off the track near DuPont, spilling 13 cars off an Interstate 5 overpass onto rush hour traffic below, authorities said.

All the deaths were contained to the train, said Ed Troyer, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

Latest developments:

— More than 100 were transported to hospitals in Pierce and Thurston counties, Creekmore said. Four of them suffered serious injuries, said Cary Evans, spokesman for CHI Franciscan Health.

— Amtrak President & Co-CEO Richard Anderson said “Positive Train Control” was not activated on the tracks when the derailment happened. PTC is a technology that automatically slows down, and eventually stops, a train if it senses it is going too fast.

— Thirteen cars jumped the track. The train had 14 cars, including two engines, said Brook Bova of the Washington State Patrol.

— A passenger on the train says his car derailed and everyone “catapulted” into the seat in front of them.

— The National Transportation Safety Board sent a 20-member team to investigate.

— Photos from the scene show at least one train car on the road, with another dangling over it.

  1. I didn’t even know what had happened till l got to work. I give God all the Glory that only three people died. It could have been worse. I just feel bad for my colleagues who couldn’t go home after work today. All lanes of 1-5 South are still closed. Hopefully, WashDot will reopen them tomorrow morning. May God grant the families of the deceased the Grace to bear the loss. May God grant the injured a quick recovery. Clean up is still ongoing as heavy equhas been brought in to pull the train cars away. It’s truly a miracle no lives were lost on the ground. May God grant the leaders of Pierce county the wisdom to deal with the aftermath of this accident. They never wanted this particular new route and fought Amtrak to Court but the Judge threw the case out. To think it was the very first trip on the first day of the new route is surprising. A day of celebration turned to a day of mourning. Psalm 91 peeps.

  2. OMG!!!
May the Lord grant eternal rest to the dead and quick recovery to the injures.

  3. Heavy Cranes on site now. Per WashDot ( Washington Dept. of Transportation) Tgey don’t have a timeline of when 1-5 South will be reopened as they have to check the overpass. They cut the ribbon only three days ago. 181 Million Dollars for the project and it crashes on its inaugural run. Press conference coming up soon.

  4. Was train derailment not part of the prophecy we read yesterday? Una good morningooo

  5. So sad, may the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may God grant the families grace to bear the loss. Wishing the injured fastest recovery.

  6. Rip to the dead. Lord grant them eternal rest. And quick recovery to the injured
