    4. This lady in question must be a very dull brain. How did she even graduate from law school in the first place? I watched their call to bar yesterday live on NTA and I heard a lot of Muslim names being called, I never saw anyone with hijab so tell me why you should be a sacred cow? I hate it when people mix sentiment with business. Haba. Must we bring religion into every thing? Have you ever seen anyone called yo bar with hijab? Or deeper life tuban tied on their head before? What manner of stupidity is this nitori olorun? Its good you learnt it the hard way, next time learn to follow instruction dull head olodo charge and bail lawyer.

    5. She's a dull head charge and bail lawyer. Mtcheeew. Why will she appear on hijab? If every religion inclined person decided to appear in their full religious regalia how will the ceremony look like? Since you can't expose your head bcos of your religion you should not have joined law then.
As far as I can remember watching call to bar ceremony, I've never seen anyone wearing hijab ,so tell me why you should be an exception? It's good you learnt your lesson the hard way, next time learn to abide by simple rules and regulations.

One intelligent lady called Grace Gureje (don't know if I got the spelling right) wooooww the whole world yesterday. She won all the whole award at the call to bar ceremony aired on NTA yesterday evening. Chai, that babe is book worm. She practically carted away every single award presented yesterday. I was flabbergasted. Grace may God continue to to keep. Am not related to you but if you can see this I was very proud of u.

    6. Nigeria is a secular state.

She should have studied Islamic or religious studies if she is so Keen on 'respecting her religion'. IMO, Your sister acted foolishly... 3 hours something! Moreover, she is not the first Muslim sister and won't be the last to be called to bar.

    9. I am pretty much dissapointed in most of you people. Especially the women who made debasing comments. You claim to be Christ like, And you derive joy from her predicament? To what end?

If you would be unbiased and sincere with yourselves, hijab is a mandatory part of her religion, one for which her freedom to practice has been guaranteed under the law. Why then should any other law deny her this freedom or right. She was pretty conservative in her choice of covering to show she didn't mean to be obvious or confrontational. She did the basic and did not appear in her full religious regalia like you put it.

If this girl has satisfied all the requirements for her being called to law, how then can she be denied this based on this one petty excuse?

People, learn to tolerate and respect other people's constitutional rights, opinion and beliefs. She's not hurting anyone is she? Let's learn to live and let's live and stop with the stereotyping and prejudices.

I enjoin you all to follow on with this issue, because trust me, if she decides to pursue this matter she will win. It is afterall a free society and her right to practice a religion is sacrosanct.

I love you all for the sake of Allah and I pray that someday, our land would be rid of bigots

    10. Erm...this will be hard because she is not the first Muslim to be called to bar, we need to stop acting like a victim all the time, she knew the rules, she knew what she was going in for, a cap under her wig would have still sufficed for the occasion, I think she was looking for trouble. And if she couldn't handle not wearing the hijab then she has no business being in that profession.
I am Muslim as well, I won't go into something that will deny me the practice of my religion, she made a choice and she has to deal with the consequences.

You and your sisters are fools, if you want to practice your religion do that in your place of worship or your house, what makes your sister so special that she thinks she can break a rule that has been there for ages, is she the first Muslim or is she mohammeds daughter? Excuse me please. If she really wanted to over serve her god she would have done that at home. Rubbish. Most Muslims in the north would make you conform to their mode of dressing cus you want to please them but she can't take a photo without a hijab for few min, then she's sick

    1. I so agree with you @Mao Akuh. I don't think this has anything to do with religious but rather ethics. Let's not bring religion into this.

Some people have been denied a pass into certain places because they are not dressed 'appropriately'. It's nothing personal.

This is not the first Muslim being called to bar, I presume? And I also believe she is not the only Muslim being called to bar that day. Did they wear hijab too?

It's about ethics not religion. She was expected to respect that as a lawyer.

No one is asking you to drop your religion practice, but no your limit.

It would have been over in less than 3hrs and now they are shouting justice. What justice?? Who doesn't know hijab or any covering isn't accepted on the call to bar?? Even reverend sisters are not allowed on that day.

Sone people will come here and argue Islam preaches covering your body but last time I checked, the wig covers your hair and the gown covers your body well.

  11. She's not ready yet then, she should just improvise and wear a very big wig to cover her head, imagine every one coming up with their different religious and traditional head gears, geles, scarfe, turban, crowns. It will become a circus.

    ReplyDelete
  12. In law school, they are told a wig cannot be placed on a wig. How can she put hijab under her wig? She should have known better. Let them not come and make sentiments

  13. If the rule says you cannot wear any other clothing to be called to the bar, then your sister should have either conformed or chosen another course of study. There are some courses of studies that demand proper dressing. Like Catering or hospitality management, you can only wear certain clothes in the kitchen, you can't wear beards in the kitchen. If you know you can't confirm, then go choose another profession that doesn't have clothing requirements. It's as simple as that. There's too much unnecessary heating of the polity over mundane inconsequential issues.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It's just like saying you want to insist on not wearing the khaki during your Youth Service cuz your belief doesn't allow it.
Call to Bar is not something to kid with. I missed mine just by being late by a few minutes and the door was shut. I dare not complain about the system cuz I accepted to abide by the rules. So if they had said no you are not allowed to wear the hijab to be called, then kindly remove it and show yourself 'fit and proper'.

  15. you cant wear an hijjab with military uniform or police uniform. the cap is enough covering for your hair. So is the police or military cap. Please respect these uniforms. This is not about religion but what the uniform symbolizes. Thesame law say do not ring disrespect to the uniform. Even in the contitution, if you wear soldier uniform, you should be jailed, not to talk of wearing colerete with hijab. She ought to be in kirikiri. Paramilitary or Law has no religion, no culture, no gender... Please going into these careers should please take note before crying foul. Y do you think the statue is blindfolded... that is true justice. If you are a moslem or christian, and your profession is a soldier, when you go to war, you kill opposition that you are warring against. this also is against our religion but by the reason of your office, you have to do it

If she wants to practice her religion she should stay away from a profession that won't allow her. It is not by force. The law does not allow it and her she is. disobeying the law all in the name of religion. That's how religion has destroyed our schools, society and life. Fanatics and blocked heads.

  17. They should go and seat down, Laws are set rules for ALL, without EXCEPTION and are supposed to be followed by ALL. Without exception.
Why not dress as they specify and wear your hijab after the ceremony. Lawyers don't play with set rules. Call to Bar as at most 4hours of your 24hours of hijab wearing.
So as they tell Law students to wear black and white, or is it black alone. Someone should now say its against his religion as a Sango worshipper to wear black. Study another course if you cant adhere to set LAWS in the Law department.
MFM members don't wear trouser and your hair must be covered always during service. Every member of the church knows this set rules. I wear my nice decent dresses. When I enter my car I pull scarf and wear my wig and my heels and babe up. Straight to lunch with my boo. But while at church I stick to their rules.

  21. Hijab is NOT mandatory. The only thing that is mandatory is that you cover the prescribed parts of your body. The Quran only makes mention of the khimar and the hijab veils because at the time, THAT WAS THE TRADITIONAL GARMENT OF THE ARAB WORLD. Even Christian and Jewish women wore hijabs and khimars because that was their cultural dress. Headscarves are not religious; they are cultural. She could've worn her wig in such a way that her hair was covered and worn a stylish high necked gown underneath her barrister's gown to cover her neck. She knew the rules of the law profession; if she was intent on becoming a lawyer, she should've have improvised. Tradition will NOT change just because of you. Hijab is not even meaningful anymore; it has become a statement of identity and a 'fashion statement' rather than a mark of modesty. Nowadays you see girls in skintight dresses flirting with men and just because they are wearing a headscarf, they think they are better Muslims than you and have the right to judge everyone else. I know Hijabis who drink sef. Hijab doesn't make you a good Muslim, please.

    2. You know nothing about what you say. A Muslimah should cover ALL parts of her body except her face and palms and yes, that includes the neck.

If that was a law as some people have stated, then I wish she had obeyed. What I can't phantom is how the law came to be in the first place. A law that contravenes or negates her constitutionally guaranteed right to religion makes no sense especially coming from the legal/judicial space. #UmmuKameelah

    2. @Aeegurl, I think you may have misinterpreted what I said. The friends I mentioned who are biased and non objective are my Muslim friends. I am a Christian but grew up with friends as Muslims. I noticed they like to support other Muslims even if it on something wrong. I was involved in an accident whereby a bus man hit me from behind (i.e the front of his car hit my back and pushed me into incoming traffic) and I was blamed for been at fault. He and other Muslim brothers almost dragged me out from the car to beat me. And that was because th driver was a Muslim man. Do you see why I say they tend to be biased, and clouded by the Muslim religion? This is just one example I have given. I still have my Muslim friends but I am cautious with them because when religion comes to play, they will not know right or wrong only religion. I still say there is more to a human being than religion

  43. You studied Law as a noble profession. There are 'modus of operandi' guiding each profession. Why don't you just stick to the rule? Most of the case study you observed while in college and in your time at Law school where all from England. Law is one of those adopted courses we practice here in Nigeria. There are no religious view to this course. Islam has no power over it. I think people like you is the problem.. Why would you want to infuse Islamic philosophy into such a noble profession? This is a noble profession for God's sake! Stay away if you're not ready! Because to me you already seem too biased to take on this profession with all ''fairness, justice and equity". People like you shouldn't be called to bar, we already have too many religious, ethnic and political problems to it. Dont bring your religious views into this profession here in Nigeria.. We don't need it. Don't pollute this noble professional for us. When you're ready to stick to the dress code then you're serious.

  44. Here is a very dumb logic:

If a Muslim sister wears a Hijab to a call to bar, should a "Cele" Christian also attend a call to bar bare footed?

Me: Who cares? They can go bare footed with their full regalia to the classrooms, offices or even travel out of the country with their bare foot to European countries with subzero temperature. It is silly, very silly that, because you occasionally wear your uniform once in a week for few hours, you would want Muslim sisters to oblige by the same standard.
