Indian Parents Desire For A Son Has Created An Estimated 21 Million "Unwanted" Girls

The desire of Indian parents for sons has created an estimated 21 million "unwanted" girls because couples keep having children until they produce a boy, the government said on Monday, 29th January.

Indian parents have historically wanted sons, who are seen as breadwinners and family heirs. Girls are often viewed as a financial burden in a country where the tradition of giving a marriage dowry persists.

Even though sex selection is against the law, illegal gender-based abortions have been blamed for a sex ratio of 940 females for every 1,000 males in the last census. But many couples continued having children until they produced their desired number of sons, the government said in its annual economic survey report.

Couples, particularly women, in India face immense pressure to produce male children and many rural families do not send girls to school, marrying them off young.

The quest for male offspring is everywhere in the world. The only difference is the extent to which people go for it.

  2. It is the same in Nigeria, this is same reason my sister in-law is envious of my marriage. She has 3 girls, instead of her to pray to God to make them glorious children she is busy going to different churches looking for a male child using my hubby as her donkey.

    1. And you think you too won't be "going to many churches" if you had three girls; even riding horse(bands)?

  3. Not only in India,my Igbo people does that too. I know of a family that gave birth to 10 girls in their search for a male child. They later got a son and their dad died last year leaving the woman with the kids. Thank GOD about 3 or 4 of the girls are married now.

If I now stylishly get pregnant and it's another boy. Let me just respect myself. Cos I don't know how I will handle 3 boys. Finances isn't even our problem persay But we agreed on 2kids and those 2 boys ware us out, coupled with both of us working.
I say ppl should just be grateful in having healthy kids.
Miss not having a girl though.

  8. Human beings we are never satisfied. You want a child, you get a healthy, beautiful girl and decide no you want a boy.

I don't have kids yet, but I will be grateful for girls or boys. I just want them to be healthy with no complications.

  9. India and China are the two countries that have killed the most girls in the world. Tens of Millions of girl babies and young girls have died in both these countries because of the lower value placed on the girl child. Then the old mothers want the daughter-in-law to take care of them in their old age when they already killed their own girl children that they conceived. Crazy ppl painting themselves as good in the name of culture.
