Portrait Of Ife Princess Tutu Sold At Record Breaking £1,205,000

Legendary Nigerian artist, Professor Ben Enwonwu’s painting of an Ile-Ife princess, Adetutu Ademiluyi, who he met while he was a lecturer at University of Ife has been sold at auction world record breaking £1,205,000.

Professor Enwonwu made the painting of the Ife princess in 1973 and 1974, but the painting went missing for many years until it was recently found in a London flat.

The painting of the Yoruba princess by an ethnic Igbo artist became a symbol of national reconciliation at a delicate time in Nigeria’s history.

    1. Yes oh! Lots of our pieces are being stolen and claimed to be created by westerners. Some archaeological pieces too were taken during the slave trade era. Very sad.

    2. Like who doesn't know this? So cliche 😏
