UK Government Plans To Build Prisons In Nigeria

The UK government has made plans to build prison in Nigeria.

The proposed 112-bed wing, built to United Nations specifications in the Kiri Kiri prison in Lagos, is to be built as part of a compulsory prisoner transfer agreement.

It will cost just under £700,000, according to a statement submitted to Parliament by Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson on Wednesday evening. As part of this agreement, eligible prisoners serving criminal sentences in Nigeria and the UK can be returned to complete their sentences in their respective countries," Mr Johnson said. It follows a deal reached between the two countries signed in 2014.

The Government believes that wherever possible foreign nationals should serve their sentences in their own country. Helping Nigeria to improve its prison conditions and increase prison capacity will enable us to transfer more prisoners to Nigeria, which will in turn free up prison places in the UK."

Deals to transfer prisoners in UK jails to their countries of origin have been made with Albania, Rwanda, Jamaica and Libya, and well as Nigeria.

  4. Story, they are tired of feeding criminals with tax payers money. British people hate spending money unnecessarily. They are doing it for their own benefit because they are smart and stingy. I don’t blame them anyway.

  10. It's a welcome development. I've been to Nigerian prison for outreach and the state that the inmates are is appalling.

    The prisons are congested.
Lot of female inmates are pregnant.
    They are malnourished.
Some don't bath for days because of lack of water.
    Lack of ventilation.

Prison should be looked at as a kind of reforming institution for the inmates, let them acquire skill and when they are release govt should fix them somewhere to work and earn some money. Take time out to visit some prison. Phewwww

  11. They will not be set free. They want to build a secure but humane detention facility in Nigeria to house those who will be sent back to complete their prison terms.
The United States already has hundreds of humane detention centers so the British Government do not need to come build any prisons here. Prisons and Jails here in the US are Holiday Inns compared to the structures like Kirikiri.
