The white man will first of all treat a shot robber before taking him to court. Talk of well behaved responsible citizens.
Stella I lost a dear cousin who was involved in an accident at Lekki several years ago due to this Police report thing. And I know several hundreds have died untimely due to this same issue and I wonder why no one is looking towards that direction.
Stella let's work together. There should be a mandate regarding police report for a person in need of medical attention. Let's stop indirectly preaching Hate! Don't help because police will hold you responsible. People stand by and watch an abandoned baby die cause no one wants to take them to hospital because of police report. People watched and even took pictures when MC Loph died in an accident, even though we heard he was still breathing. How many I wan talk?

Police report should simply be scrapped,if they made that rule because of armed robbers,aren't the armed robbers entitled to being treated and prosecuted?I might be wrong about this but this is how i feel.
Turning a patient away because of Police report and having them die on the way when they could have been saved is wrong...how do these hospitals feel when they hear the patient they turned away died on the way to another hospital?

Police Report very frustrating. First you have to pay money for pen and paper, then 25,000 naira for the report. If your car was vandalised, they will hold the car as exhibit, then u will have to pay money to bail the car. Woh! Peaceful protest is needed o. I'm anonymous before dem locate me.
DeleteIt's a serious matter. But I can say matter if factly that in lagos state, Fashola has passed the law regarding this already. Which is that EVERY person with a medical emergency, be it a thief or a murderer, be treated first of all before any police documentation.

This became effective I think, 4years ago. I was one of the individuals that petitioned the lagos state governors after 3 incidents of this type occurred back to back. I have also lost people because of the hospitals' negligence and act of irresponsibility.
I'm glad that the poster sent this in to be revisited. It is fast becoming absurd. But we can't concentrate on lagos state alone, it should be same everywhere in Nigeria. Hence, the federal government should be alerted about it, and laws should be stipulated to guide and enforce it.

Most times, they see d case as being a forgotten/ hopeless case and they dont want to record death in their clinic so they use the police report to send the people who brought the sick person in.
If its a case they can handle, they go down to business n advise they people go to bring police report while the take pictures n continue.
All this is because of our failing health care system...else they wont write off a case be even trying.

Honestly, police report ish should be scraped. The first and foremost duty of the medical team is to save lives before demanding for any report.
ReplyDeleteIf the police report thing is done because of robbers, then an injured suspect should be treated first on the watch of doctors/nurses to save his life so that proper investigation can be done before demanding for any police report. The treated suspect can even help the police in their investigations but can't be of any help if he's left to die while waiting for a report.
The suspect may even be an innocent citizen cos he/she hasn't been convicted by the court as a criminal. So scraping of the police report can also save innocent citizens from losing their lives to what they know nothing about.

ReplyDeleteDuring ebola crises, I took a friend to a hospital in VI in d dead of d night n she was rejected due to high tempreture... They didnt even offer her a secluded ward....a doctor managed to come out after 1hr n still told us off. It was a private hospital.

ReplyDeleteIt's really a sad re-occurrence. I remember an accident that happened sometime last year, a man was knocked off the bike he was riding by a vehicle on top speed. He was terribly injured and was struggling for life(a lil piece of flesh was what was holding his legs to his body). Instead of taking him to the hospital he was taken to the police station. The police station and hospital were just a stone throw from the accident scene. By the time they were done from there and he got to the hospital, it was already night(it happened late in the evening) and he had already lost too much blood. He died in the early hours of the morning. Because the doctors could do little or nothing to save him at that point.
What am I saying? The time they kept him at d police station would have been enough to save his life. These things happen all the time. I pray we get the change we seek in this country through the right leaders.
It is pertinent that we continue to speak up,about such ills until there is a change..hopefully the right bodies will look into this..

I remember when I was a corper in ondo state close to Akungba, I Had a terrible accident, the villagers as in d farmers, were the ones that came to our rescue. I lost a brother whose life could have been saved because of this useless police report issue. He died helplessly at the hospital. My family is yet to recover from the shock. I hope the law or policy behind the request for police report can be scraped. Human life is precious.

ReplyDeleteThere are step-by-step procedures to take in order to ensure that a new law is approved by the legislative arm of government.
I am not very conversant with these steps and I am just taking my time to study the workings Nigerian legislature.
There are lawyers and human rights advocates as well as members of the legislative arm of government who read your blog.
Perhaps, you could send one of your 'efficient memos' to them and ask them to enlighten us the citizens on what to do in order to repeal that no-police law...?
If there is a petition to sign, minimum number of signatures required, who can/will present the petition to the house, how many times this petition needs to be presented, and how long it would reasonably take before the law may be considered and hopefully repealed.
At least that way, our legislators would have actually done the work they are paid 'armed robbery millions of tax payers naira' to do.
The problem in Nigeria is not just leadership, the major part is citizens not knowing what to do and even when they are aware, being cowardly and shying away from it.

She was in a taxi travelling from Enugu to Ph n got hit by a stray bullet right inside the taxi, the driver n all the passengers ran away trust naija pple just gather watching her bleeding until one lawyer came took her to a clinic in Aba who refused to touch her without police report. The good samaritan went for the report got it n they started treatment it was too late almost ten hours after the incident she died. She spoke to her family in enugu on the phone assuring them she will be fine but they came for her corpse the nxt day. Am so for what ever needs to be done to change this law even if its protest march count me in.

ReplyDeleteYes, it's so true....A friend was shot along iba-iyanaipaja route on his way home from work. He was bleeding and was rushed into a big private hospital opposite iba estate gate( let me not call names sha). They refused to attend to him cz of police report. Luckily, he was on his way with a friend who happens to be a lawyer. Tolu, the lawyer threatened to sue the hospital if anything happened to his friend. He made sure they understood he knew his rirights and was a practicing lawye. They then attended to my friend but didnt discharge him till the report was brought.

DeleteThis issue of policereport has led to several loss of lives. The few doctors that I know that went ahead to treat patients without police report end up regretting it cos when they eventually report the patient after treatment, the police harshly deals with them. The government especially our "lawless" lawmakers can look into this but I guess they r too busy filling their pockets.

Apart from the rada rada policemen, The doctors on their own sef...do they not take the Hippocratic oath??? How do you not attend to such people seeing their condition?!?!?!?!. *deep sigh*
