Nigerian defender, David Oniya Dies After Collapsing During Match


Nigerian defender David Faramola Oniya, 29, has been confirmed dead on Saturday after collapsing on the pitch during a friendly match between his Malaysian club T-Team and Kelantan.

Oniya who doubles as the T-Team captain reportedly collapsed three minutes into the match in Kota Bharu and was taken to hospital.




The match was abandoned after 60 minutes when a message was received from the hospital that he had died.


Oniya had only just joined the Malaysian club this season.

    1. It's most likely due to an inherited heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The typical picture 8th usually like this... A seemingly fit young man in his prime who just slumps and dies after vigorous activity. God rest his soul and grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss. That said, they really need to start doing pre employment check for these athletes

    An Echo as part of footballers routine investigations may have saved this man.
