    3. The answer is none!!!! It says "on my way to St. Ives" it didn't say Man, Wives, Sacks, Kittens were on their way to St Ives too! They could have just been standing on the road while he was in a train, car or boat!

I remember this particular teaser as a kid!

    8. You guys seem to be forgetting an obvious fact! When the Narrator says "kittens, cats, wives, sacks" how many were going! He never said "ME, kittens, cats, wives",... If he included himself then the answer would be "1"! But he's asking the question based on the people he saw!!! And none of them was going to St Ives. (Unless we are automatically assuming he included himself in the people that he "saw")

      Delete
    9. He was on his way to St Ives when he saw what he saw so why won't you count him. The answer is 1

      Delete
    10. @8:41 you don't include him bc the question asked "kittens, cats, sacks, wives" how many were going to St Ives! It doesn't say "kitten, sacks, cats, wives" how many PEOPLE were going to St Ives! I believe this is just common sense abi basic English question! You just need to read between the lines. He's asking of the people and things he saw on his way how many of those people/things were on their way to St Ives.... None of them. I don't know if I make any sense to you sha....

    1. None because the question was ....wives,sacks,cats and kitten, which one was going. They didn't mention man or say 'everyone' in the story.

So out of the afore mentioned, NONE was heading to St. Ives

    1. Wives, kitten, sacks and so on.. The answer is none

  4. Only the man. This is because the riddle never said he was going to St Ives TOGETHER with his 7 wives.

    3. Which man? Narrator or the man he saw on his way? Because obviously they ain't the same.

'On my way, I saw a man with....'

The narrator said 'on my way to st.Ives I saw a man' the man he saw might actually be standing on the road with his family or travelling in the opposite direction. It wasn't specified so that enture family is scrabble from the question.

Now, the narrator didnt ask about himself as he already announced thar he was going there but the question was of the man's family with their baggage which was going to st.ives.....and the answer is NONE.

  15. Just one person which is the man who has already mentioned going to St. Ives. We cannot add the man with 7 wives, 343 cats and 2401 kittens to it as we cannot determine their destination.

  42. Total of 344 were going to St Ives (sacks inclusive)....

    One man + 7 wives = 8
Each wife had ..... 7 sacks
    Each sack had 7 cats = 7x7 = 49 cats
    Each cat had 7 kittens = 7x49 = 343 kittens
    Total number of cats = 49+343 = 392 cats

    total figure on journey =
    1 man + 7 wives + 7 sacks + 392 cats
    = 407 + the person that saw them = 408

    ANSWER = 408.

  47. 1 person na.

This riddle was featured in some primary school English reader, not sure if it was Oxford or Macmillan... Hehehehehe, na here we go know who go correct primary school lol.

But then, I don't even know what primary schools use nowadays, so those who were in primary school after the early 1990's might not know either.
