Rebellious Granny Vanishes From Care Home To Get A Tattoo.

A rebellious great-grandmother left her son stunned when he discovered she was missing from her care home having fled unannounced to get her first tattoo aged 79.

Tony Sellers was baffled when he arrived for his daily visit to see his mother Sadie - only to find an empty wheelchair in her room at Daleview House in Londonderry.
The grandmother-of-11 and retired civil servant had popped out with her walking frame to get inked with an outline of a heart on her left arm alongside her granddaughter Samantha, 22.

And when asked what her family would think of the tattoo, she left customers at Tattoo Studio 76 shocked by retorting: ‘I don’t f***ing care’.

Ms Sellers said: ‘When you get to my age, you just have to live life to the full every day. I was talking about it with Samantha for a couple of weeks and she showed me hers.
'She came in one day after her holiday and I just thought: “Well, I’ll get one too”. I’m absolutely made up with mine.

'I asked the fella how long it would take and he said it had finished five minutes ago. I never felt a thing. He just laughed at me.’
Meanwhile at the same time lorry driver Mr Sellers, 57, was becoming concerned as he searched the care home for his mother.
He added: ‘She’s been in the care home for about a year now and she’s only been out twice before, both times with my daughter.

‘I came in and there was no-one in the room but her wheelchair was there and the Zimmer was gone. I swear, 99 times out of 100 she’s in the room.
'It was about 3pm and I thought she might be getting dinner, or in the TV room or out in the garden for a walk. I thought it was a bit weird but I tried not to worry.
'There was no sign of her but the staff said Samantha had been up and they’d gone into town. I was thinking: “What the hell is going on here?” Samantha said: “Yes, granny is with me.”

‘I went in all I saw was three big lads in their 20s, covered in tattoos, and there in the middle was mum getting one herself. They all thought she was fantastic.
‘She was laughing and giggling the whole time. She never mentioned anything about wanting one to me but I think she had been hatching a plan for a while.
‘She’s an old lady with brittle bones, that’s why she has the wheelchair, but it didn’t seem to faze her.

'She’s normally very prim and proper but she does sometimes swear like a sailor behind closed doors. The lads were in stitches laughing at her - they thought she was fascinating. I think she’s already planning another one.’
Samantha Sellers said her grandmother was ‘an amazing woman’, adding: ‘She would always say how much she liked my tattoos and piercings and she thought about it for a long time. She was really chilled out about it all.

‘I took her to Studio 76 because that’s where I got mine. I’m very close to her so I got a matching one done afterwards. They’ve said that I’m not allowed to come back without my granny in future.’
Ms Sellers added: ‘When I came back to the home and everyone heard about it they all rushed round to see it. Tony didn’t know what to think. Samantha is my right arm and my left arm. She spends nearly all her spare time down here with me so it was lovely to get this done with her.'
