Doctor Allegedly Forgets Towel inside Patient After Operation

For allegedly forgetting a towel inside a patient after surgical operation, two doctors working with a private hospital in Lagos are to face the full wrath of the law.

The duo, Dr Taiwo Shogunle, 53 and Dr. Adeleke Olusegun, 43 of St. Raphael Divine Mercy Specialist Hospital at Ijede, Ikorodu, Lagos State have been arraigned before a Lagos Magistrates’ Court for allegedly causing the death of their patient, Omojola Bamgboye during surgical operation.

The doctors were arrested by operatives of the Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos. After investigation by Inspector Monday Omoigui and his team, the doctors were arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos on a one count charge of felony, to wit, murder.

Police prosecutor, Supol Eshiet Eshiet told the court in charge No L/28/2016 that the accused persons committed the offence between 18 and 19 December, 2015 at St. Raphael Divine Mercy Specialist Hospital, Ijede, Ikorodu, Lagos.
Eshiet told the court presided by Magistrate A.T. Omoyele that the doctors unlawfully killed the man during surgical operation by negligently abandoning a foreign body, towel, in his abdomen.

He said the offence is punishable under section 222(2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused persons denied the allegations in the open court and the magistrate admitted them to bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

Omoyele directed the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and forward it to the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP, for advice.
She adjourned the case till 9 September, 2016 for mention.

    2. That's how a renowned gynaecologist forgot a very big gauze in my mum's stomach after fibroid operation in 2001. She almost lost her life if not for the mercy of God. The suture reopened and was already septic but God that knows she is yet to finish her assignment on earth frustrated evil plot.

She had d operation at Alalade Specialist, done by the baba himself. When it was obvious there was something wrong, Dr wrote a letter trying to exonerate himself stating that she was infected upon getting back home. It took God using foreign Drs in a catholic hospital in Abeokuta to nurture her back to life 2 months after surgery, she finally got home a week to her 50th birthday.

The Dr that was bragging started begging and bringing different supplements.

      Rip to the dead man

    4. Even in the UK here, it happens. If you enter the theatre, you see a chalk board where they write the time of surgery, the type of surgery and the team involved.
Below all these, the Matron in charge of the surgery is there to give them equipments she signed from the store.
She counts all the forceps, scissors, towels and bowls.
At the end of the surgery, she counts the instruments again and record it on that board before the surgeons actually start closing the patient up, she must have done that and indicates that all instruments are complete.
I was in govt hosp in Lagos for a while before I left and they also do it. General hosp, teaching hospitals etc. It is very important cos those towels are small and once you use them to pad, they turn so red that if you won't differentiate it from the organs, not like they are like bathroom towels.
Everyone's role is important, keeping stock before and after surgery is very very important. When people now wants to leave their own job and do other people's own, it is imperative that every doctor should take stock himself, someone can even set you up and tell you COMPLETE, and you will hurry out.
I DO NOT TRUST ANYONE! I re check my patients BP even though it's already been done, I take my stock, even though they will call me sluggish, the end justifies the means.

    1. Hahhhaaa God. My sis just got operated on and I was praying seriously this kind of story won't happen. I thank God. Maybe he was sweating in the theatre, used the towel to wipe the sweat, placed it on the patient for easy access (disgusting) then forgot it in there

    2. That is just a dumb comment. You cant touch your face talk less of cleaning sweat during an operation. The towel means a small guaze used for the patient during operation. Basically the nurses failed to count the swab and hence this mistake. If it was counted beforw the patient was closed, it would have been noted that one is missing and they would have found it. I say nurses should be prosecuted long side

    1. Yes its Negligence but No its not visible like was well explained above the swabs are usually so red you can hardly differntiate from the organs. The precaution usually is to do a count before and after to be sure all swabs are accounted for before patient is closed up. Very unfortunate

  12. WTF!!!!!!! Some doctors are just agents of darkness destined to destroy lives. This silly mistake is too costly. I have an aunt whose case was scissors. Tho it was later removed but took sometime to realise that the doctors that operated on her left a pair of scissors inside her body. She's alive up till now but she's still suffering from that stupid mistake from docs.

  16. It is actually very common for doctors to forget things in patients bodies during surgery. Even abroad. Towels and cotton are usually very often forgotten behind because during the surgery they become soaked with blood and turn red making it easy for the doctors to not notice they're not a part of the body. That is why in surgeries abroad the count how many towels are to be used during surgery and count again before they sew up the person to make sure they haven't left anything behind.
