Mama Tee Series -Fair Skin Versus Dark Skin

Is it true that fair girls rule the world?

Recently, one of my friends saw Tee's pix on my DP and this conversation ensued:
Friend: Oremi, your daughter looks good
Me: thank you dear
Friend: so you've finally taken my advice
Me: which advice?
Friend: To use some products and clean up her skin
Me: Her skin wasn't dirty so what would I be cleaning? Harmattan makes her lighter if that is what you mean. By February/March she will revert to her normal colour.

Now, this friend of mine almost caused a scene during Tee's 1st birthday celebration. She screamed loudly when she saw my daughter and asked why I allowed her to 'go dark'. She went on about how I should have maintained her baby colour (she was fair).

My people, almost all babies are fair at birth you would agree, so why should I prevent her from acquiring her natural colour as she gets older?

This friend of mine and her hubby are chocolate in complexion but they have a daughter and a son who are both fair. She used products to prevent them from going dark right from birth, she got waist beads to 'shapen her daughter's waist' according to her, she made artificial dimples on the poor girl's face too. When I asked why she did all that, she told me she was securing their future. Hehehehe.

She gave me numerous examples of rich fair skinned female celebrities in Nigeria who have nothing else to offer other than their beautiful fair skin. Lols.
She then gave me names of some products I can use to 'clean' my daughter's skin. Oh Lawd!

Here in my area, I notice some mothers are bleaching their children's skin.

I was at a function one day when we were discussing skin colour. One said if she had a daughter, she won't be a dark skinned girl. She said fair skin girls rule the world. Another one said all the interviews she attended back in her single days, only fair girls were employed and that a fair girl gets attention anywhere before a dark girl. My people, is this true?

On this blog too, I have seen some vacancies mentioning fair girls as being preferable for a particular position. Little wonder every girl is now fair.

The ones who could not 'tone' their skin will use a lighter shade of foundation and powder making their faces to be bright like the morning star, others would filter their pix on social media until they turn to 'oyinbo'.

Every fair girl is described as 'beautiful'.

What troubles me now is why women 'rub' bleaching creams on their girls, let them grow up and decide their skin colour. These days, you see little girls with sunburn on their faces. Which way my people?

Mama Tee

*My take on this is that if you see any parent bleaching the skin of their kids, report them to a law enforcement agency or get them arrested. You do not secure your child's future when you force such on them, you damage them and gift them insecurities....

    1. Law enforcement on top bleaching cream, a friend of mine used it for her 4year old daughter Cus the younger one is lighter so she wanted them to be the same color. My children are darker than I am but their skin is so beautiful I can't think of touching it, what I wanted to do for my daughter was to keep massaging her waist way after birth like some Arabians do but where I see the time nor the energy?
I don't get what future they are creating for their kids, that doesn't involve God or education, so their kids are meant to be models or what? Nawa o

  8. Get them arrested in Nigeria? You make me laugh....

Becky: oga officer, I want to report a case.
    Police: go on.
Becky: I have this neighbour (mama Nkechi) she's bleaching her daughter.
Police: 😏😏😏😏..how e take 'consign' you. Abi you dey jealous say her pikin fine pass your own.
Becky: it's not like that, we were advised to report such issues....emm
Police: hold it there,*calls on his colleague* okon, come hear the rubbish this woman dey yarn. *explains everything to him*
2nd police: imagine the nonsense, arrest her for public nuisance, she's a suspect.

The bleaching thing is so rampant these days, have a neighbour that bleachs her kids. And yes fair girls get more attention than dark girls. We are all beautiful irrespective of the skin colour.

I could see the shock in their faces when before our finals, my wedding card was out. My fiancee then, now my wife and mother of our kids is a very dark lady. That is what clicks for me.

What am trying to bring out is that being light in complexion doesn't make ur world go round. Just be comfortable in your own skin. When I see young beautiful people that has died,it makes me think deeply that even if u are very very pretty or over handsome, na death b d end of every thing. Just be satisfied with whatever you have bcos we humans are insatiable. Vanity upon vanity, all is vanity

  21. Well since majority of Africans are dark skinned, it is only normal that people will prefer what is scarce. That is not to say one skin is better than the other. Black skin can be very beautiful if you observe the following :

Take lots of water, fruits, veggies. Hydration keeps the skin alive.

Stay away from bleaching cream or cream with dangerous chemicals, they only destroy your skin and make you age on time.

Avoid the sun or use sun screen

Moisturise with a lotion first before applying your coconut oil or what ever oil on your skin.

Know your facial skin type, if you have oily facial skin, stay away from foundation and try and concentrate on keeping your facial skin alive by eating healthy and avoiding anything that causes break out or excess sebum production.

In conclusion, you know your skin, study it and find out what works for you. The colour of your skin does not determine your success in life, it is what you have in your head that can take you far.

If you want to bleach, do it for yourself not because of any man because when the consequences come knocking you are own your own!

  27. That is how one of my uncles linked me and one man in his work place. The man lived in another state with my uncle and he is an engineer. When we started talking on phone, he sound nice and caring. Then one day he asked me to send my pix, I sent it. He now said he thought I was fair. He said my uncle knows that he loves to marry a fair girl that is why he didn't bother to ask me if I was fair. He said his mother was very fair and beautiful and so he too wants to marry someone like his late mother.
I saw his own pics. He was black and looking very old and 'handsome'. He told me he was 39 but he looked 45, I didn't mind as long as he was working and could take care of his family, I was working too, I just wanted to get married. He was still calling me after he knew my colour but still complaining about wanting a fair girl. I just deleted him when the complaints was too much. Now I'm still single at 37, no man, no child. I regret not asking him if I should bleach. I would be married by now cos he was very serious about settling down and my uncle said he was not married before and no baby mama. I don't know if I should start bleaching cos all my fair friends are married. One of them even married a widower who is taking good care of her.

  30. Funnily I am dark in complexion, never felt the need to be fair. And I was considered one of the prettiest girls in school. Never really liked fair fine guys, infact I didn't like fine boy types. I preferred that dark chocolate guy, manly and tall, but I married a very fair fine boy (story for another day bcos women keep checking him out, even in my presence ). For whatever reason only fair Igbo/delta guys approach me. Meanwhile I am Yoruba, but married to delta. Yoruba men hardly approach me. Its those fair nna baby I will take care of you guys.
My son looks exactly like the father. I don't see the big deal in complexion. But I have noticed anywhere my baby goes people want to carry him and stuff, because of the light skin and plenty hair and general cuteness.
Meanwhile a lady I don't really talk to in church came to approach me if my son can be her ring bearer. I was abit surprised because we are not close. I now used style to ask her because I see her with her brothers son smtimes, same age as my son. How come she isn't using her nephew? Do you know this lady told me she doesn't want her nephew because he is dark and on the big side. That she wants her little bride and ring bearer to be fair and same small size. That my son matches more with her vision. I was flabbergasted.

  31. The fair and dark debate goes on. I don't encourage bleaching but our society has made it seem like if your are dark, it's a problem. Many jobs just like mama wrote up there will only employ fair girls.

Many are bleaching their skin to either secure marriage, look attractive or to get a job. I am dark and so is my hubby but I my son is very fair to everyone's amazement. Many think I am bleaching his skin because neither my hubby or I are fair.

I am very comfortable in my skin colour. I am black and proud.

  33. How can you say we should not try and improve our children's prospects.

Do you know what we their dark skinned mothers went through, we can't open our eyes and allow our children go through same.

You will go to parties with your friends and you will be left hanging cos the guys prefer the light skinned ones.

Walking on the street with your light skinned friend and a guy would have excuses her ten times before one guy will find you attractive.

Even for job adverts, you will see light skin complexion and attractive... and yes have seen such adverts on this blogs talk less of the discriminations in the real world.

Even single and mingle same thing, you will see the guy's interest.... Light skinned.

After Agbani, which other dark skinned has won Miss Nigeria or MBGN and please Agbani is not dark. Naomi Campbell is darker than her.

Babies sef are not left out. Check out PZ cussons baby of the year competition, finalists are mostly light skinned(and most times the winners are) . Babies are adorable, yes but get a light skinned one and see people are always eager to hold them.

The discrimination is very real even in a black country. Whites even appreciate dark skinned more than us.

Last last....... I heard consuming lots of carrot during pregnancy can improve the skin complexion of babies. Once I see man marry me and am pregnant am definitely experimenting this. Make the child sha no go over light.

And if that doesn't work, coconut and Shea oil with a toning cream.

My opinion...... you are free to criticize but if you haven't been through what have been through and felt the things have felt.......

    3. Kerry Okoye... Everything Anon 16:30 wrote up there is true. This is the reality & dark skinned ladies all over the world can relate. I really felt her pain because these have been my personal experiences as well. But unlike her, I vehemently disagree to bleaching my skin and GOD FORBID I do that to my kids. As I no fine reach (according to humans), I gave myself brain to be book smart, street smart, business savvy, very close to God & stylish. All these have made me confident and I walk with my head high. And I have come to realise that REAL intelligent, responsible men (& ppl in general) see beyond skin, love & respect such women regardless of their skin tone.

Anon 16:30, this is the truth u should imbibe. Renew ur mind. Take the pain & rejection and build something great with what God has blessed u with. LIFE IS NOT ALL ABOUT MEN! The problem with naija women is that we seek validation from men and it is downright pathetic! STOP IT NOW. Teach ur daughters to be strong and independent; not to be tools for the attraction of men. What do u think u will be teaching her? That she's only good for fucking?
Maybe God has kept u single so u learn to be a better woman & mother. Because right now u are on a destructive path that would destroy ur innocent unborn kids. Please think.

    4. Stella you are fair so you won't understand.
My sister anon 16:30, I feel you, you are so right. Right From babies, fair skin gets upper hand. Anywhere u enter with a fair baby, it attracts people. Anywhere a fair guy or girl enters it attracts people.
If you are a fair and beautiful girl, knock on any door, it will open. I have started using this organic soap and I can see results already. My skin is toning and blending fine. Ghana soap mixed with different kinds of essential oils and other things including kojic acid, lemon oil, honey and egg white. Leave on skin for some minutes before rinsing.
Thinking of using it on my 4yrs old girl too. Her cream is Johnsons baby lotion mixed with carrot oil, vitamin E oil and small honey. She gats to be fair by fire by force. She is getting there already.

    6. Listen to me anon 16:30. Too much vitamin A (present in carrots for example) can cause birth defects and miscarriages. The chemicals in simple moisturisers are even hazardous enough. Talkless of bleaching creams. Ever wondered why baby creams are different from adult creams? Do you know that the Parabens in your simple nivea and jergins have been found in breast cancer tissue? They have started banning it in some countries. Then imagine what is in a toning cream for a baby!Your baby will grow up hairy, with dark lips and scars that won't heel quickly. A naturally fair child looks remarkably different from a child with "little" help. The difference is clear. It's Alaafin Oyo Fatai rolling dollar and Malaysia boys that will be following her. Is Michelle Obama light? How about Maryam Babangida? As a Muslim man he kept to one wife When she was alive. What of Nana Rawlings?! Shallow men like shallow women. Please don't project this ideology on your daughter though I feel like you have already made up your mind.

I never had guy probs, I had many toasters back in the day. Cheer up! Most of those jobs just want them for "happy hours". If it's any consolation most guys think light skinned babe's are loose ( which is not the case).

If you want light skinned babies, then PLEASE marry a white. Do not put your children through the horror of bleaching cream. Marrying an African will still give you dark skinned children even if your hubby is light skinned.

But mehn your self esteem is beyond repair. I suggest you see a shrink

    3. Ah anon 19:28 and anon 19:36, many thanks. I think I'll just stick to using it on my hair. Better safe than sorry.
Was looking out for a natural body lotion or cream but I don't want to look like burnt plantain.
Maybe during Winter abroad but for here, mba, let me stick to my store bought lotion.

    4. I hope you get to see this.

I am fair in complexion and I use Shea butter only as my body cream. When I started it newly,I became darker but this is my fifth year using it. I have a glowing skin, very healthy and fresh skin and still fair.
I intend to use it all my life.

  36. The extent to which ladies go to have light skinned babies is frightening
A rich, pretty, influential and young business woman once approached me to "just have sex with her" for her to have a light skinned baby "as handsome as me"
Her two kids were dark like her husband. She was pleading with tears.
The things she promised were huge, very huge. She wanted to give "seven figure alerts" even before we commence.
I refused (not because I don't like the sex or the money and other pecks but for Christ's sake etc.)
Why not go to sperm banks and get any sperm even a white one (well seemed like she did not have "the liver" to introduce such to her husband due to his resentment for raising another man's child).
It reached a point she was stalking me. Satan is wicked, to think that that was the year I gave my life to Christ is insane. I had to cut off business transactions with her but that did not deter her. Till date she still regrets that her kids are dark skinned.

  37. The interesting part now is that most people who are 'dark skinned' are only so because of sufferhead. Not eating right, unhealthy lifestyle, exposure to sun and dust. Better weather and good food will bleach them without cream sef lol. Please dont classify yourself as dark skinned until you have lived in very good living conditions and your skin tone remained as is.

  38. You people who are fair or dark, you're lucky na. At least you have a name for your complexion.
What about us who are hanging in between?
What name do I a call my complexion?
All those jobs that have fair or dark complexion as a criteria, the person will say I'm not fair enough, the other person will say I'm not dark enough.
If I stand next to a fair person, that one will say I'm dark. Next to baba dudu, I be oyibo.
See, complexion is the least of my issues. I can recognize myself in the mirror, that's oka.
