H&M Apologises Over Image Of Black Child in 'Monkey' Hoodie

H&M has apologised for an advert showing a black child in a green hoodie bearing the words “Coolest monkey in the jungle”.

The ad sparked a backlash on social media, with some calling it inappropriate, disgusting and negligent.

The image of the model in the green hoodie has been removed from the H&M website; two similar designs modelled by white children remain.

The image, which appeared on the UK website of the Sweden-based multinational, shows a black child in a green hoodie emblazoned with the slogan “coolest monkey in the jungle”.

On Sunday, the photo began to be shared by social media users dismayed by the “an insensitive association between the young model and a hateful slur against black people,” the New York Daily News reports.

As the image continued to circulate on Monday, the backlash against the clothing giant gathered pace. Others noted that another hoodie in the range, with the slogan “Survival Expert”, was modelled by a white child. Some ascribed the error to a lack of diversity and a reminder of the importance of representation.

  1. I am really surprised this idea scaled through various plans board meeting up till execution and no-one, I mean no staff of both H&M and its ad team thought it absolutely wrong to let it fly.

Blacks and Monkey analogy in any concept is a serious insult.

    2. I don't understand it at all. Like I was thinking I'd read an inscription not so terrible, only to see 'coolest monkey in the jungle'.

I think they should be sued.

And which mother allowed her little son to put on such.

      I'm so disgusted

    3. @Beloved, for a brand as big as H&M, this is a huge mistake. Very huge.

@Eka, the mother may have been ignorant of the inscription hoodie branded on her son. Sometimes one never really thinks deep of certain things until there is a major outcry.

    1. Blackberry, honestly if you've ever been 'Racified' before you'd relate them just fine. Honestly when a racist bastard looks at you from head to toe and shakes his head with a judgmental look, is as biting like when an ezemuo pays you a surprising visit. Trust me!

    2. If the racist bastard looks at me like that, am I dumb?, abi dem seal my mouth? I will give them the same racial slur bumper to bumper even tag their mama white chimp

    3. BlackBerry if you find yourself in a place where you are the only black amongst whites and such scenario like Rowland described happened, just ignore and get off their circle as soon as you can. Once you are outnumbered, don't fight back.
Not that you are a jelly oh! It's just safer to avoid a knife stab or a bullet.

    5. @BlackBerry hmmm! So they will call the cops and accuse you of 'black man' violence? Some of the ways we react to things in Nigeria is only acceptable in Nigeria. Like @bloggie said just walk away. If you have proof and it affects you in any way (like in your place of work) get a human rights lawyer.

  6. I'm shocked and disgusted at the same time. A brand like their shouldn't do this; to think my wardrobe has many of their collections makes me sick to the stomach. I will pass by their collections next time I'm shopping. This is really insensitive of them.

    1. Most whites see blacks as monkeys (when they really want to be rude) At some point they believed they proved themselves right when a certain u.s president visited Africa and some of the African masses climbed on trees to get a better view of him.
      It's just sad and demeaning
