Texas Based Nigerian Couple Ordered To Pay Enslaved Nanny

A Houston-area couple who pleaded guilty to federal charges related to forcing a Nigerian woman to work nearly 20 hours taking care of their home and five children without pay for two years was ordered Friday to pay her more than $121,000 in restitution.

Chudy Nsobundu, 57, and his wife Sandra Nsobundu, 49, also were sentenced by U.S. District Judge Nancy Atlas to seven months in jail and seven months of home confinement, plus three years on probation.

The naturalized U.S. citizens originally from Nigeria recruited the woman there with the promise of a $100 monthly wage. Instead, authorities say they abused her physically and verbally while she worked at their home in the Houston suburb of Katy from September 2013 to October 2015.

Chudy Nsobundu in 2016 pleaded guilty to visa fraud while his wife pleaded guilty to unlawful conduct with respect to documents in furtherance of forced labor.

According to court documents, the nanny would work every day from 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m., couldn't take breaks and had to eat leftovers and not fresh food, including being forced to only drink milk left in bowls in which the children had eaten cereal. She also couldn't take hot showers.

Authorities said the Nsobundus prevented the nanny from leaving their employment by keeping her passport and by threatening her with physical and mental abuse.

The nanny reached out for help and was rescued following a tip to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center. Her name has not been released.

Prosecutors say the couple knowingly caused a false visa application for the victim to be submitted to the Department of State with numerous pieces of false information.

The woman's date of birth was incorrect on the application, listing her 20 years older than she was, said she was married when she was not, incorrectly indicated the purpose of her travel was to attend a niece's graduation and falsely identified her in a letter that Chudy Nsobundu was her brother. Prosecutors also said he made false representations under oath on the visa application to increase the chances that the application would be accepted and to hide the fact she'd be working for his family as a housemaid and nanny under conditions that violated U.S. labor laws.

Federal prosecutors said Sandra Nsobundu took the nanny to the U.S. Embassy in Lagos, Nigeria, to obtain her visa and provided her with a letter indicating she didn't speak English well, that she was to attend a family graduation and gave her a picture of her husband with instructions that she tell embassy officials he was the nanny's brother and that she was married. The nanny's husband listed on the visa application actually was the Nsobundus' driver in Nigeria.

    1. I feel sorry for all my young friends in Houston, Atlanta and Maryland having all these live in nanny’s. Although they pay them well and most of the nanny’s only work Mon-Friday, it is still illegal in the US especially those coming on visiting visa and doing 6 months in and out. I was tempted to accept one but now reading this story above I will rather take care of my own kids and rough out daycare. Before some crazy nanny puts you in trouble. It will always be your word against hers. Unfortunately the law will believe the victim first aka nanny. I doubt she will agree to work for $100 and take care of 5kids, there must have been a different arrangement from the start. It is well... this couple is finished, their career over, livelihood over.. so sad

    4. This nanny is a terrible liar but at the end of the day God will judge everyone. I know this couple and this is not the true story. She told all these lies so she could get residency. Be careful of who you help and bring into your home.

    5. This is what these nannies do, they all want residency.

    6. I am shocked that some commenters cannot see the wrong doing of a selfish and wicked couple who enslaved a nanny in the US because they would do the same thing. Some Nigerians even enslave their own blood relatives abroad too because they don't want to pay them.

If you have a live-in Nanny, open a bank account for her and pay her appropriately so that you can show the evidence in court. Let the illiterate nannies learn simple English and allow them time off at weekends or weekdays and respect another person's Human Rights! Some Nigerians don't get it at all. They are not slaves! Nobody should pity such a wicked couple and blame the poor nanny. It served them right but I pity their innocent kids who may suffer while they are in prison. Social Services can take good care of them.

  5. Another American Wonder story. Look before to you leap.

God bless America. See how the court handles a case. The victim is protected and her name hidden, while the offenders have their names and pictures and mugshots published. If it's Naija, the victims face and name is published, even rape victims. While the offender is blurred or not shown at all.

    1. Don't mind people cursing the couple. When you have kids and live abroad then you will understand what people go through with children. They must have had sn agreement before they brought the nanny to the US but to get her papers she decided to play the victim.
Thats why i would rather put my children with a registered minder since my mum is late and don't have any other alternative.
They will beg you to bring them abroad and then play the victim. I hope shes happy the children will be taken away from their parents.
Put your children in breakfast or after school club when they reach the age, if not its a registered child minder or Nursery.
      Shikena.

  8. @Anony16:57, I actually followed the story from last year. The facts then was that the Nanny used to work for them whenever they visited LAgos for 20k or less a month. So they offered to bring her to America for 100$ (35k) which is like a raise. She is not educated and is as well ignorant so didn't know that 100$/month is far below minimum wage in US. When they brought her they maltreated her and still didn't pay. They told her they were paying her salary into her nigerian account but she later made calls and found out it was a lie. Another thing against them here is that they forged documents and details while filing visa for her which is a crime. Your friends with live in Nannys can deny not knowing that their Nanny is on illegal stay. But here it was the man that filed her visa application and he has her passport so they can't deny not knowing she is illegal.

    1. Don't mind them, they carried their Nigerian abusive behaviour to the united states. Slavery has been abolished many years ago in the US, so if they carry that their slave mentality to the US they go to jail. This 'house maid' rubbish that uncivilised people still do in Nigeria does not happen in the US. You either hire an adult and pay them for the work they do for you and treat them with respect other wise you go to jail. A lot of Nigerians in the US have gone to jail because of this issue. It is always Nigerians having this issue with their nannies because we are used to abusing maids back in Nigeria. Other people from other parts of the world living in the US don't have this problem oh, only Nigerians why?

  11. How some people treat hired help so badly and yet sleep comfortably at night beats me. A labourer deserves his wages. Why withhold your help's wages even when you know that person is working his or her ass off for you? People are mean mehnnn. No fear of God.

  12. It serves them right abeg. If they had treated her well, none of these would have happened.
