The UK has officially rejected Nigeria’s request to transfer former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu to serve the remaining of his prison sentence in Nigeria. British authorities insist he must complete his nine-year, eight-month term in the UK.
Ekweremadu was convicted in March 2023 for trafficking a young man to London in order to harvest his kidney for his daughter, Sonia.
He was found guilty (This was the first conviction for organ trafficking under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act.) and sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison.
In November 2025, President Tinubu sent a high level delegation (which included Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Attorney General Lateef Fagbem) to London to negotiate Ekweremadu’s transfer to Nigeria but the UK Ministry of Justice rejected the request, because they are not sure that Nigeria would enforce the sentence if Ekweremadu was returned home.

What did they expect???
