During a plenary session, lawmakers said the unbearable costs, with one-way tickets from Abuja to Lagos now ranging between N400,000 and N600,000, up from N50,000 to N100,000 earlier in the year. This escalation has left ordinary travelers, especially those planning holiday trips, struggling to afford air travel.
Senator Yunus Abdulfatai led the charge, moving a motion that prompted the Senate to summon Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, along with key stakeholders in the aviation industry. The Senate aims to urgently address what it describes as exploitative pricing, particularly as the Christmas and New Year rush intensifies the financial strain on families.
The root causes of the fare hike include the rising cost of Jet A1 fuel, driven by naira's devaluation, coupled with high demand and limited aircraft availability due to maintenance issues.
The insecurity on Nigeria's roads has further pushed travelers towards air travel, exacerbating the price surge. Critics note that short domestic flights are now more expensive than some international routes, such as London to France, highlighting the disproportionate burden on Nigerian citizens.

The fear of being kidnapped is the cause. It's better to spend more and travel by air than going by road and end up paying more as ransom or being killed.
ReplyDeleteThe only solution is to.make the roads safe. We need our roads back. Jesus Christ we hand over all Nigerian roads over to you. Every traveller will go and come back in peace 🙏
They need to also summon Airpeace because that man is not giving peace to the SE,how can you from the SE hike the price of airfare to the East in December while other airlines are still relatively affordable?
ReplyDeleteI don't support Air peace but my dear the pressure is too much. Almost everyone wants to travel by air. You need to go to the airport and see what is happening. It's like market.
DeleteIt's because of insecurity na,who wants to be kidnapped?

It's not just Airpeace alone. All the airlines raised their fares. One way ticket to Owerri is now #400k if you see seat o. There is a shortage of aircraft due to maintenance issues and also issues with some aircraft leasing companies. Aviation business is not for the weak.

ReplyDeleteIn sane climes festive periods are when they cost across a lot of things but our own na the reverse. Even the road transports are not left out .
ReplyDeleteAviation tickets even there is high demand IS EXPENSIVE EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD especially when you are not booking well ahead. You teach and should know the impact of increasing demand when supply is fixed. International flights may be cheaper because of the economics of scale and shared resources between carriers as well as benefits of selling data of users, working like an investment bank, and locking them in with points. Local flights are a different ball game, like the motor parks.
DeletePlease stop with the fake news. There are enough problems already. Air ticket no be groceries. Even in demand gift items, concerts can be slightly hiked with extras given to deceive buyers. Items like electronics and are sold with older items on sale to draw a crowd.
If the internationally set price of petroleum products (as a result of demand and supply) is rising, is the business supposed to go into bankruptcy for you to comment that they didn't manage their business wisely? Is government supposed to subsidize the cost in a country where most people will never be able to afford air travel?
The ministers for transportation, defence and works need to focus on making it safe for Nigerians to drive around on the interstates and in each state, aggressive security measures need to ensure this as well. The effect of this insecurity on local businesses is massive.
13.45, oya sorry no vex! This chronicle wey you write no come too much bayi?
DeleteThe airlines are sponsoring the road kidnapping.
ReplyDeleteMake u dey reduce ur lie. Calm down he never reach like that
DeleteAll businesses are profit driven, prices will always go up when demand goes up.
