Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has confirmed that 37 suspected illegal miners died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The men who were arrested on September 15th and 16th during operations in M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto villages were found dead early on Thursday, September 17,2026.
NSCDC said a suspected disease outbreak was the cause, however one survivor said the cell was overcrowded with little air.
The governor ordered an investigation, declared three days of mourning, and cancelled a planned APC rally.
NSCDC has also launched a probe and suspended the state commandant and the Police are investigating as well.

They were human beings for goodness sake. This is heartbreaking, it was just hustling for daily bread, there's so much hardship in Nigeria now. I hope they get justice.
