Rose approached me and pleaded for a job at the site, but there was none I could offer her. She requested to join the boys I had contracted from the community to work.
At first, I thought she was joking until I saw her bring out the clothes and boots she intended to use for work. I got curious and asked, "Why do you want to do this?" She said she needed money to sort out some pressing family needs.
At that point, I couldn't hold her back. So I asked the guys if she could join them. They laughed and asked if she had the strength. She said yes, and I let her join them.
Although they were to use a mixer, they unanimously gave her the lighter part of the job to handle. They were so kind and jovial with her while they worked.
She was very serious working with the guys. At the end of the first day, as agreed, I settled them on a daily pay arrangement. I only added an extra ₦2,000 to Rose's pay, making it twelve thousand naira to cover her transport. It was a promise I had made to her when she told me how far she was coming from.
The next day after work, she told me she would prefer to be paid in bulk. While I paid the others daily, she left hers with me until we completed the job.
Occasionally, I bought food for them at the site. At the end of the job, we had worked for eleven days, bringing her total to ₦132,000. She had collected ₦12,000 on the first day, so her balance was ₦120,000.
I appreciated every one of them by gifting them an extra ₦5,000 for a job well done. The total sum of ₦125,000 was transferred to Rose. She thanked me so much, and I promised to connect her with the house owner if he needed someone to do the cleaning. We exchanged contacts and she left.
She called for some time regarding the house cleaning, but it didn't work out. The owner of the building gave the job to his cousin, who is an industrial cleaner. So communication stopped.

When I changed my phone earlier this year, I lost her contact, which was on the other phone. After over a year, guess who called? Rose. This time, she had called for something so 'huge'. Last week, I travelled and met with her, and it had a fruitful outcome. However, every other detail remains confidential, at least for now.

Rose’s story just highlight that we need to seek, knock and ask. She took her life into her hands and went out with a spirit of determination and got what she needed. We need to all stay determined for our outcome and go seek out what we need.
