Pope Leo XIV Undergoes Successful Lung Cancer Surgery

The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Leo XIV has successfully undergone lung cancer surgery after doctors diagnosed him with lung adenocarcinoma, a common form of lung cancer.

The operation took place on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome.
Surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung using a minimally invasive video‑assisted procedure.
The Pope spent about three hours in the operating room, with the surgery itself lasting roughly 90 minutes, and woke up without complications.

He is currently recovering in his hospital room, and all public engagements have been cancelled until October 20,2026 as he undergoes post‑operative care.
Doctors say further tests will determine whether additional treatment is required.
