Groom Walked Out Of Traditional Wedding After Family Allegedly Demanded ₦1.2 Million Bride Price

A traditional wedding in Mbaise, Imo State, ended abruptly on Sunday November 1, 2026 after the groom got angry and walked out with his people over a ₦1.2 million bride price demand from the bride’s family.

According to reports and a video circulating online, the ceremony was already fully set and guests had gathered expecting the event to begin.
With the bride’s parents late, her uncle was in charge of the family negotiations but trouble started when the uncle reportedly presented a ₦1.2 million bride price, a figure the groom immediately rejected.
Witnesses say he stood up, signalled to his entourage, and walked out of the venue, leaving the ceremony unfinished and guests stunned.

Cant traditional weddings be done without bride price?

No wonder the women are always so vicious to their house helps.
As they are sold like goats and chickens their supposed men (and probably treated like such) they transfer that anger and humiliation to innocent children.
      No wonder.
      I see.

    3. Where in Mbaise.? Another thing is that I don't know whether the man is prepared to to marry and more over I don't know if he has money. No family, kindred ,village,or town in Mbaise ask his in-laws to pay bride price #1.2 m. The idot don't have money simple.

    3. Abionah seriously? Is this what you would advice your brother or son to do instead of walking away?
This is why divorce is rampant nowadays cos most women will not tolerate that.

  14. My mbaise friend in lagos then went through same thing.Very beautiful lady, after intro,(her parents are late) they( uncles )brought list.
3 cows, goats, boxes of hollandaise, kegs of red oil, different categories of alcohol, the list was endless. They now said the man must pay the family (for her being a graduate). He must also pay some amounts to the late parents, buy things for her aunts. She showed me the list and wept and wept, they did all this because they heard and knew her husband worked in an oil company.Bride price nkor, they said 1.5m(this was 13 years ago o)
They dragged and dragged for months they no gree remove reasonable thing, girl was tired of the back and forth, she and her man decided to get married in the court, and they got pregnant.
The uncles kept waiting for feedback for months, next thing they heard was she was pregnant.
Na them come dey find the babe and her man, they eventually came down to their level because my friend was starting to show and had the trad wedding and church. And yeah, they lived happily ever after.
Why will you subject someone to such barbaric acts simply because he wants to marry your child/ward?

    2. Na them come dey find the girl and her man?. How? If the lady is acturally from Mbaise or Mbano, I do not believe this.

They will not look for you rather they will set a trap, if anything happens to you or any member of your family, they will not come. When other people's children are getting married, your parents will not partake in the sharing of the rites.

  16. Very bad. This exorbitant billing in the name of bride price really needs to stop.

  17. This is very common with uncles when the real father is late.
I see it as wickedness because they don't care if the groom walks away, they want the girl to remain single.

  18. I will walk out too...Greedy uncle ready to reap where he did not sow, plus the bride has become an object to be sold, this African culture should be abolished! That's why men like Dante will never value women tueeeh!!!

  20. If the lady's father is alive will the uncle advice him to collect ₦1.2m as dowry. Some family members and relatives are made from devil's leftover mud.

  21. If it happened as reported, there was a great misunderstanding there. One does not really finish marrying his wife in Igbo until her final funeral rites.
They ought to have negotiated with one another and reach a compromise on the overall bride price and what could be paid immediately.

  22. He did well..
    Nonsense and ingredients

  23. The guy does not love the lady. He has made up his mind to disgrace her. Every kindred in Mbaise has a list of traditional marriage rites. Before you fix your traditional marriage, they will have given you the list of the things you are expected to provide. You have a choice to either buy the items in the list or pay cash. There is no how he will not have an idea of what is expected of him before the traditional marriage day. Moreso, the price is negotiable. Someone that loves the lady will come for her.

  24. This happened when my friend, an Mbaise lady wanted to marry an Anambra guy. The girls family started their wahala. My friend called her father aside and told him that if his brothers do not talk well, she is leaving with her man ( they were already co-habiting anyway) and by the time they see her again it will be with pregnancy. Quick, quick, the father called his kinsmen to order . He too knew the kind of daughter that he had. The sad thing was that his friends who followed him all had decided that nothing would carry them to Imo State to marry. Let everyone marry their own type. Some families exaggerate the whole thing. Another friends family did the same thing. The guy married her cos he loved her but after that, her family never saw shishi from him. Even to come sleep over/visit...he did not agree.
