BRISIN Reveals Youths Now Sniff Pit Toilet And Lizard Dung As Codeine Substitute

The Basic Registry and Information System in Nigeria (BRISIN) has called for urgent sensitisation against the use of pit latrine because many youths now sniff latrines as a substitute for codeine.

Dr Misbau Lawal, the Coordinator, Health and Environment in BRISIN made the call while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Ilorin.

Lawal said that the since codeine had been banned by the Federal Government, many youths now sniff pit latrine and lizard dung as substitute. He said that there was urgent need to discourage the use of pit latrines by the government at all levels. He urged community leaders to sensitize their people and ensure they dispose lizard dung in their environment by burying it.

According to him, lizard dung comprises uric acid and all reptiles excrete uric acid.

He said, “The vapour of decomposing human dung has effect on the central nervous system, producing narcosis just like codeine when inhaled. People using pit latrine should dehydrate it with sulphuric acid or the government can recycle human defecation to make bio-gas for economic benefits.

Drug addicts will always be drug addicts. If they ban pit toilets, these sick people will find another alternative to get high.

If the govt discourages the use of pit latrines, what will happen to people for whom that is the only recourse? Do they want the poor people to resort to the bushes and streams to begin polluting the already heavily polluted environment?
These people should stop being reactionary. We have a public health time bomb on our hands! They should consult with public health specialists to find a sustainable solution to this terrible addiction menace.....and not least of all they should provide a conducive environment so that these youths can envision better for themselves and thrive!!!
