ReplyDeleteAbroad get levels or so I overheard as a couple of blokes were arguing in the bar over chilled drinks at the weekend.
ReplyDeleteAccording to them, there is outside country abroad and then is overseas abroad. They opined that if you didn't fly over water, then "dat one na outside country." One could surmise that they placed a higher degree on flying over water. "Overseas" is they called it.
It got me thinking though. Cotonou, Niger and Chad too are abroad. But how come no one boasts about going there? We don't really regard African countries as being 'abroad' even though they are. Overseas though is another matter entirely. To get to the whiteman's land you must go over the sea.
Does the argument have a leg to stand on? Abroad and overseas aren't the same? I think it does. Abroad get levels.

ReplyDeleteThey don’t recognize the countries in Africa, they call it Africa, from my personal experience. They don’t call it abroad, they just call it Africa, like they believe Africa is a country for all black people.
