INEC Chairman Yakubu Steps Down And Hands Over After President Tinubu Directive

On Tuesday October 7, 2025 Professor Mahmood Yakubu officially handed over leadership of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve as Acting Chairman.

Yakubu’s second five-year term was to expire in December 2025, but he stepped down early following a directive from President Bola Tinubu.
May Agbamuche-Mbu, the longest-serving National Commissioner at INEC, now leads the commission pending the appointment of a substantive chairman.
