Chronicle Of Blog Visitor Narrative

 Hmmmmmm....

STAND ALONE NARRATIVE
USERS

Hi Stella
I am a civil servant but instead of coming Monday to Friday. The management decided that staff should be coming thrice in a week with Monday made compulsory. It was done to reduce transportation burden.

I decided to take a part time private teaching job my teaching work schedule falls on Tuesday and Thursday. And I am paid 40 thousand naira a month teaching two important art subjects.

The problem is I noticed that I am always used for invigilation either for test or exam. The school is a big school with standard facilities and much teachers. Students pay more than a million naira cus it has facilities and boarding.

What's annoying me is that other part time teachers are not used for invigilating they only teach and go but in my own case I have no time to rest even when they are writing test I am used as invigilator alongside their full time teachers..

I complained to the guy in charge of their academics and he said he won't want me to have issues with anyone that I should come for test invigilation which I did. Now they want to write exams.

My work schedule at my civil service job has been changed to Monday Tuesday and Thursday which is the exact day that I go to the school. They are writing exams and they use me for invigilation throughout their exam period.
I have no rest even as a part time.

Should I tell them I can only come for invigilation on Wednesday and Friday which are my new off days at my civil service? But by Thursday they will want to use me again cus that's when their exam will be finishing. I can only be available on Wednesday only or I should say I can't partake in the invigilation at all.

Note other part time teachers are excluded. I am the only single lady among the pertime teachers cus I don't want it to clash with my office job. But my mum is advising I take part in the invigilation so that I can collect the salary for December.
what do I do? The invigilation is clashing with my office work. I intend quitting this year.

Why dont you manage and continue working until you are really ready to do away with the  Job`?Why dont you voice out how they make you feell byusing you like a paid helü?

  2. You took the job because of your office schedule flexibility now that the school is making it hard for you, walk away for your peace of mind and mental health health, e never reach to stress yourself. Private jobs are always like that, they take undue advantage, the peace you have at govt job will be frustrated with them, no be everything is money.

Your mom saying December salary while your main job is clashing with your stipend job.

    1. You could have used your free days to go learn any skill that can improve your income, even doing private lessons for students is better than that job.

  3. you should communicate your present challenge to the school, they will respond to you and tell you what is obtainable. Your fear is not valid, you should not die in silent because of the small money you are getting from that school. They are treating you that way because you are single which is very wrong. Do not allow anyone to over use you, if other part time teachers cannot be used for such job why you?

Did you sign any contract agreement over this or you just took the job without checking all their conditions? if you cannot do the both, please quit the teaching job while you get something better.

  4. You are a part time teacher, you are probably expected to have other jobs on the days you are not supposed to teach!

I think, lying or just hiding things gets us in mess we shouldn’t be in the first place. Simply tell them you have other jobs you do on ur off days that wouldn’t allow you to come to school on those days to invigilate. If they fire you, so be it. Just look for another school you can be upfront with!

You people just like complicating your lives for no reason! As a part time teacher, you should have stated the days and hours you would be available for and shouldn’t have to work outside those hours.

    1. No she didn’t lie to them
They were asking her to do extra work. Even though it wasn’t clashing with her civil work at first, it still wasn’t right because other part timers were only teaching.
This is common with Nigerian employers. We hire a nanny and add cleaning and gateman job to it

Tell the powers that be that your full time schedule has changed. Also I agree with your mum, don’t shake any table till you collect the money you need

  5. Pls continue doing it, let them know politely that your schedule in your office has changed too. They will understand.
Some people are looking for a side hustle like yours to complement their main job. Keep doing it till you find something better. Don't do anything that will make them owe you or sack you. It will boost your CV if you get a better opportunity in future like online teaching or teaching outside Nigeria.

  6. Since the part time job is already stressing you, you can do away with it. How can you let a part time job stress you over your main job. What if you were not given this flexible work schedule, shebi you will still be going to work days a week without any hope of extra inconme. Confidently tell them the convinient days for you since they see you as a valuable asset and they will adjust. My take is make you no loose guard to allow the part time spoil the main job.

  7. Speak up politely.

Explain your inability to come for that day. Ask for reduction of your work load on the days you are now available. If they say no and you cannot cope, leave. Alternatively, see the additional duties as opportunities to learn more about school business/administration. But with your present mindset, you are not likely to learn. So re-negotiate the terms of your part-time employment. If no agreement, find something else to do on your stay home days.

  8. You applied by yourself so if you don't want again pls leave .Another thing is better for them not to have teachers than unfaithful ones

  9. Let them know your new schedule and if they are not pleased with it, so be it.

Start checking other places too. I wish you all the best.

  10. When I signed on with my primary employer one of the stipulations in the employment contract is that I am free to work other jobs but they should have no impact on my ability to do my work. You must speak up and be honest if days are going to conflict or you cannot participate in invigilation that is not being done during the work hours. There are even online teaching jobs, so teaching jobs are easy to get. And if you want to set your own hours then focus on tutoring. I remember one bv stated they made some high amount tutoring.

Just speak up. If things are really tight and you need the money then do as your mom suggested.

  11. Poster learn to speak up firmly. You're a part time teacher for crying out loud. Inform them that your schedule has changed and tell them the new days you will be available. They either accept it or you move.

  12. The mistake you did was not telling the school about your work schedule, since it's a part time job.

  14. I am the Poster. The principal knows that I have a job before she employed it. Was the principal that said I should be added to invigilators but I didn't disclose myself to other teachers. I will only be paid 20k this December cus school vacate by December 12. I told them I can only invigilation once in December the lst Wednesday they have not responded

  16. This whole situation is simple: they saw someone quiet, unmarried, and eager to earn extra, and decided you were the soft spot they could load work on. Not because the job requires it, but because you don’t complain loudly like the others. That’s how Nigerian workplaces operate - they don’t misuse who is available, they misuse who won’t push back.

Part-time work is not supposed to enslave you. If your civil service job has changed your schedule, tell them clearly. No story. No apology. Just your available days and hours. If they value you, they will adjust. If they don’t, leave - if you don't mind. Nothing here is worth risking the only job that gives you stability.

Your mum is talking from a place of December money, which is true. But only if your mental state could persevere till the end of the term. To collect your December pay if you must, but don’t let a part-time gig drag you into problems with the job that actually matters.

Speak up. Set your boundaries. Because going forward, you need to think from a place of sanity and long-term survival. There’s no trophy for dying on top of invigilation. Your main job feeds you; this one shouldn’t be the one dictating your life.

You wear the shoe and understand the dynamics better than us, so think deeply and be intentional about your short-term objectives with this side gig.
