Nigerian Senate Directs NAFDAC To Enforce December 2025 Ban On Sachet Alcohol

On November 6, 2025, the Senate passed a resolution mandating the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to strictly enforce the ban on high-strength alcohol packaged in sachets and small PET bottles.

Lawmakers emphasized that no additional grace period will be granted beyond the current moratorium.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent national importance by Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong (Cross River South), who warned against industry lobbying to delay the ban.
The ban is from a 2018 Memorandum of Understanding signed between NAFDAC, the Federal Ministry of Health, FCCPC, and industry groups to phase out these products over five years.
Sachet alcohol is linked to underage drinking, addiction, and unregulated consumption due to its affordability and concealability.

  2. Sometimes Nigeria does behave.
    Now do betting.
I m on the OPay app and when I open it, my eye is immediately drawn to the betting icon because it’s the only one that moves.

That should be illegal. You don’t encourage harmful addictions

  3. I've never drank it but whilst the rich are popping their champagne and drinking their expensive wines; what alternative have they provided for the poor? Or are they not allowed to drink? The disparity between the poor and rich is too wide in Nigeria.
Being born in Nigeria alone is a struggle.

    1. I get your point, although alcohol is a carcinogen anyways and equally damages the bodies of the rich and the poor alike, but only one group will have the funds for good medical care. Though I guess if you are living in misery you may desire to forget your condition even for a brief moment, and the poor do deserve their misery relief. With all of that in mind, alcohol should always look like alcohol, it should not look like ice pops or something fun that would entice the eyes of the young. The writing should be easy to read that even someone with poor vision would know immediately that it is alcohol. Alcohol should never be camouflaged.
