ReplyDeleteNetNaija CEO Emmanuel Analike has been arraigned in court over copyright infringement charges.
ReplyDeleteEmmanuel Analike, the founder and CEO of NetNaija, appeared in court on Wednesday, March 5, 2026. The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) brought him before the Federal High Court in Abuja. They charged him with multiple counts of copyright infringement.
The charges include possessing, reproducing, and distributing pirated movies and music through the NetNaija website. NetNaija is a popular site many Nigerians use to download movies, music, and other files, often for free.
Analike has pleaded not guilty to all the charges. His lawyer asked for bail, but the judge, Justice Suleiman Liman, did not grant it right away. Instead, the judge ordered that Analike be kept in Kuje Correctional Centre until March 9, 2026, when the court will decide on bail.
This case comes under Nigeria's Copyright Act. The law was updated in recent years to fight online piracy more strongly. Many movie producers and music artists have complained for a long time that sites like NetNaija cause big losses because people download their work without paying.
NetNaija started around 2009 and grew big because it offered easy, low-data downloads. For many young people and students who cannot afford paid streaming services, it became a main way to watch Nollywood films and listen to Naija music.
BV's what do you guys think? Is this a necessary move to protect Nigerian creatives, or is it harsh on someone who made entertainment accessible to millions who can't pay for subscriptions?

DeleteI saw this too. His sentencing was basically because of copyright infringement. He copies other people's work without any acknowledgement or credit if I ain't mistaken.

To talk true, what he was doing wasn't a good thing but a lot of people enjoyed it while it lasted, including me.

This happened to my younger brother and his wife, their landlord and his wife showed them shege banza because they didn't patronize the wife, my brother works inside a popular market where everything is sold cheaply and he usually buys everything there, he has to start buying from them once in a while to avoid their troubles.
