NUC Bans 'Dr.' Title For Honorary Degree Holders In Nigeria

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has introduced strict new rules stopping anyone with an honorary doctorate from using the title “Dr.” before their name.
The policy, which took effect on March 30, 2026, is aimed at restoring clarity, honesty, and credibility in Nigeria’s academic system. Under the new guidelines, only people who earned a PhD through academic study or are licensed medical doctors may use the “Dr.” prefix.

Holders of honorary degrees must now use post‑nominal letters instead, such as D.Sc (H.C) for Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa).

The NUC stressed that honorary degrees do not confer academic privileges — recipients cannot teach in universities, supervise research, or work in regulated professional roles. The rules also tighten how universities award honorary degrees: institutions must have produced their own PhD graduates before giving any out, can award no more than three per convocation, and must base selections strictly on merit. No payments, no favours, no self‑nominations, and no serving government officials are allowed.
Universities must publish recipients’ names on their websites and may withdraw the honour if the awardee later behaves in a way that tarnishes the institution.

The NUC says the move became necessary because too many people were misusing the “Dr.” title, blurring the line between genuine academic achievement and ceremonial recognition.
