Actress Patience Ozokwor Blames Nollywood Poverty On Lack of Royalties

Veteran actress Patience Ozokwor (Mama G) has raised a major concern about the financial struggles many Nollywood actors face.

In a recent interview, she said the core problem is simply that actors don’t earn royalties.
Her words were direct:
“The reason why Nollywood actors and actresses are poor is because we don’t get royalties. We only get paid for our appearance at the shoot. That’s why everyone is running to YouTube.”

In Nollywood, actors typically receive a one‑time payment for their work on set and after that, all future earnings from sales, TV reruns, streaming, or online views go to producers and the rights owners and no matter how successful the film becomes, the actors are not paid more...

  5. Typically worldwide, movie producers and studios pay actors and actresses one off. It is on rare occasions that artists are offered a percentage of the movies earnings and that's if the artist is an A-list of the A-lists. Take Brad Pitt for example, he is basically a brand on his own and movies featuring him can make huge sums in the box office. He gets paid an upfront fee and also a share of the profits. He is exceedingly wealthy as a result.

Royalties are not typical in the movie industry. Every movie made is a gamble for the producer and the studio. They have a budget they pay the artists from and if the movie is a flop, the producer is left looking at the bottom of an empty bag.

In the US though, the Screen Actors Guild has a streamlined framework for actors and actresses earnings. No studio is permitted to pay below that. I really don't know what the Actors Guild of Nigeria does to ensure actors and actresses get fair wages. I however don't expect them to enforce payment of royalties actors/actresses. Nigerian movies age poorly, are generally of low quality and don't generate much viewership.

  6. I am glad that this well respected pioneer is speaking up. It is tragic to see all the stories year after year of actors who are destitute, living hand to mouth. The union could do more for them.
