Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu‑Ojukwu, made this known while speaking with journalists at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Luanda, Angola.
According to her, military defeat remains Nigeria’s most effective strategy in tackling terrorism. She explained that the AU summit focused on strengthening conflict‑prevention mechanisms, combating terrorism and violent extremism, and promoting peace across the continent.
“You cannot negotiate with terrorists. They do not understand negotiation or mediation; you cannot appeal to their reason, compassion or conscience,” she said.
Bianca stressed that the government believes terrorists only respond to decisive security action.
“The only language terrorists understand is the language of defeat, and this is what Nigeria intends to make clear.”
She added that Nigeria’s fight against terrorism is being pursued with determination and zero leniency.
The minister also noted that Nigeria’s delegation attended the summit to clearly communicate President Bola Tinubu’s firm stance on defeating terrorism, with Vice‑President Kashim Shettima representing him at the meeting.
