The deaths occurred between September 3 and 7, 2026, with some victims reportedly dying in their sleep or collapsing at home.
Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the deaths. Health officials suspect the incident may be linked to locally brewed alcoholic mixtures, including Monkey Tail and other herbal or ethanol‑based drinks. Samples have already been collected for laboratory testing.
As an immediate safety measure, the Chairman of Odigbo Local Government, Taiwo Adegoroye, has banned the sale and consumption of all locally made alcoholic drinks for one month. He warned sellers not to produce or sell any locally distilled alcohol until investigations are concluded.
