The corpse was to be buried the next day, but before that, the creditor, on getting the information, went with some guys to the family house and held onto the corpse, demanding that his money be paid before it would be buried.
That sounds strange, right? But that was exactly what happened.
The family pleaded for more time, which the creditor would not grant. Eventually, he agreed to forgo the interest but insisted that the exact money he lent to the deceased be paid in full.
The family, with the assistance of some relatives, was able to raise the money and settle him. For some minutes, I was trying to wrap my head around how a man could confidently hold onto a dead body. I said to myself, what if they had left him with the corpse, what would he have done with it? Ordinarily, some persons would have borne the loss, since the person they had the transaction with is now late.

Let us flip the coin. What if a creditor dies? As a debtor, would you return the money to the family members? Would you let them know you are indebted to the deceased?
A couple of months ago, I needed a loan from a man I had known and transacted with twice. In those two times I obtained a loan from him, he did not request collateral. At the time of repayment, I paid back in full with interest. So around July, I went to his office to pick up a loan.
We agreed on the amount and interest. He requested that I bring collateral, which he had never done before. I noticed he was having difficulty while speaking.
He was not feeling fine. I really needed the money, so I got home and wanted to go back with collateral to pick up the money when a still voice whispered to me not to go back to the man.
I jettisoned the whole idea of the loan. The loan would have been for a month, but guess what happened? This man passed on less than two weeks after I had visited. So many thoughts came to my mind. "How would I have settled the debt and gotten back my property?" "Would his family have agreed to release my property to me even after I explained my transaction with him?"
Has any of you here ever owed a deceased person? If yes, did you eventually pay the money? If no, how did you feel about it? Afraid they'll haunt you or you think the dead no longer have power over the living?

What a story. The Bible does warn believers against borrowing and lending, there is real wisdom in that approach to life. I don't like lending large amounts that I cannot afford to lose, I feel better to give and forget but lending large amounts is just too risky, not to mention all the unsavoury emotions it can stir up when problems happen with repayment. I've seen ppl embarrass others terribly because they owe them money.
ReplyDeleteIn my religion it is not advisable to loan unless it's totally and absolutely necessary. Now here is the thing,if you have to loan, you must be sure to have witnesses or people that can attest to the fact that this person loaned from so so.Why?If this person that loaned dies before paying back the loan, the witness(es) would come forward to tell the family of the deceased that this person loaned this amount from this person and the loan would be payed back.It could be from a bank, cooperative,an individual or individuals, the loan must be returned by the deceased family. Now if someone dies, the family/families would announce and announce for days, weeks, months to the public that if the deceased owed anyone, they should come forward with proof or witnesses and the debt would be cleared.
ReplyDeleteNo, it does not sound strange. The fact it's your first time to hear such doesn't mean it is. It is something that happens.
ReplyDeleteWhat if they had left the corpse with him? Just thinking.
