Nigeria's Minister of Works Umahi Demolishes Concrete Barrier on Niger Bridge After Public Outcry

Minister of Works Dave Umahi has ordered the demolition of the concrete divider recently installed on the First Niger Bridge after widespread public complaints.

The old bridge connecting Onitsha and Asaba was closed earlier in September 2026 for emergency repairs after vandals removed key bolts, nuts, and expansion joints. During the repairs, workers installed a central concrete barrier to separate traffic.

Motorists, engineers, and netizens immediately raised concerns, saying the 1965 bridge is already narrow and the divider made the lanes dangerously tight. Many warned that a single vehicle breakdown could block the entire bridge and add unnecessary weight to the aging structure.

Videos now circulating online show workers breaking down the barrier on Umahi’s orders.
