The owner lives in the United States.
The person who moved in happens to be his childhood friend who was having a shelter problem and had no option but to accept the help.
One funny thing I have noticed is that seven out of ten people who stay in free accommodation find it difficult to be responsible because free things do not give them the opportunity to think straight or work on themselves. I have seen many landlord’s children and grandchildren living a useless life here in Ibadan and in Lagos.
This man finds it difficult to pay for the pumping fee. We have four flats in this compound and each flat has its own prepaid meter. The pumping machine is connected to only one meter, so we decided to pay one thousand naira monthly to the person whose meter carries the machine. Recently, before the man moved in, I had a meeting with everyone and increased it to two thousand naira because the units you get when you purchase one thousand naira electricity have reduced, and I know how much power the machine uses. Sometimes, the guy would not pump because he was managing his units, which I understood.
When I explained to the new man what we pay for pumping every month, he argued with me and said it was too much, that it should not be more than five hundred naira. I asked if we could connect the machine to his own meter so that we could pay him two thousand naira instead of the five hundred. That would be six thousand for three flats and his own making eight thousand. We argued for minutes and I left.
This is the second month and he has not paid for pumping, yet he keeps using water. Fortunately, the lawyer called and asked me a few questions, and I immediately knew the man had reported me.

I explained everything word for word, and the lawyer told me to ignore him, that his friend, the owner, had already said a lot about him.
The lawyer said he would be the one paying the money and every expense would be deducted from the house rent before sending it to the owner. He said the man is so irresponsible that he cannot even buy electricity units on his own meter. The owner is the one doing that for him, and he is working. He advised me to ignore him because he will soon start behaving like a landlord, and he does not want me to have issues with him.
I do not know why some people are so entitled. Your sister, brother, friend or anyone gives you free accommodation and you cannot conveniently do simple things by yourself. Small repairs, you leave them for the person, and you think the person will be happy with you. I doubt it. The person can send you out at any time, and you will start saying the person is wicked. Nigerians need to do better.
Some people will never change until they pay rent with their own money. The same thing happened with the former landlord’s son. He is not responsible at all. He does not pay school fees, he does not pay house rent, nothing. He lives a free life but has money to chase women everywhere. There is no bar where they do not know him.
What a pity.
