The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had filed a 23 count charge against them in 2022. The charges included not declaring properties like lands, a residential estate, shopping malls, farmland in Abuja and Maiduguri, plus large sums in bank accounts. The NDLEA claimed these broke rules under their own act and the Money Laundering Prohibition Act.
Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment today. He ruled that the prosecution did not provide enough proof to show the properties belonged to Kyari or that the case stood up. The judge said the evidence was weak and the case lacked substance, leading to the full discharge and acquittal on all counts.
This ruling only covers the asset declaration matter. Other cases against Kyari, including ones linked to cocaine allegations, are still ongoing in separate proceedings. Abba Kyari was once known as a top "super cop" in Nigeria for major arrests and operations against criminals before his suspension in 2022 amidst these probes.
