The Central Bank of Nigeria has given JPMorgan approval-in-principle to open a merchant bank in the country. The proposed bank will be called JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited.
This is the first step in the licensing process. It does not mean the bank can start operations yet. JPMorgan still needs to finish incorporation with the Corporate Affairs Commission, meet other operational rules, and get a final licence from the CBN before it can begin business.
The bank is expected to focus on wholesale banking, capital markets, and advisory services. It will mainly serve big companies rather than everyday retail customers.
CBN Director of Corporate Communications and Investor Relations, Michael Akuka, announced the approval on Friday. He said it shows growing international interest in Nigeria’s financial markets. The move comes after the banking sector recapitalisation exercise and other reforms aimed at making the system stronger and more attractive to foreign investors.
CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso has said the goal is to build a stable, competitive financial system that is connected to global markets and can support investment and growth.
