Nigeria's Presidency Responds To Gov Makinde’s Claim On NLNG Dividends

The Presidency has debunked Governor Seyi Makinde’s claim that the Federal Government is withholding ₦250 billion in NLNG dividends for each state until after the 2027 elections.

Speaking at a budget stakeholders’ meeting in Ibadan, Makinde alleged that the money had already been spent and would not be released until after the polls. He said Oyo State had identified projects tied to the expected funds.

The Presidency described the claim as false, explaining that ₦250 billion per state would amount to ₦9 trillion for the 36 states alone , a figure that would require NLNG to pay over $25 billion in a single declaration. It noted that NLNG has never paid such an amount at once.

According to the statement, NLNG has paid about $21.5 billion in dividends over the last 25 years, with less than $3 billion received since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office.

The Presidency accused Makinde of making misleading political statements, saying he has turned “false, unguarded claims into an art form” since pursuing his presidential ambition. It urged Nigerians to disregard the allegation, describing it as an attempt to stir disaffection against the Federal Government.
