A woman has been found dead in her flat in Dorset six years after she died.
The woman, named locally as Anne Leitrim, lived in Tolpuddle Gardens in the Muscliff area of Bournemouth.
A bailiff, estate agent and two locksmiths broke into the ground floor flat on Tuesday and discovered the remains.
Dorset Police said the body was believed to be that of a woman in her seventies but said it was not treating the death as suspicious.
Neighbour John Stanley said: "It's horrifying that, after that amount of time, why hadn't anybody noticed it?
"Because we thought she moved out. She owned a car - the car disappeared - so we automatically thought the lady's moved out and that was it."
Neighbours said they thought Anne Leitrim had moved away
Ruth Evans, who also lives in the street, said: "To be honest, I'm still coming to terms with it.
"I haven't stopped shaking in two days. You feel so guilty that we didn't try knocking on the door or try to get into the flat or report it to somebody but we genuinely thought she had moved away."
Cliff Rich of the Contact the Elderly charity, which supports older people through loneliness and isolation, said the length of time made this case "quite extreme".
*wow she must have been alone,no family,no friends,no one to care for her...this is so sad to even imagine.
How sad! This world is just changing into something else. Let me take a break from reading blogs. I need to get over what I saw.

DeleteOyinbo people have a very annoying way of minding their business. That's how I thought my baby was choking to death and my mum ran out to the car park to wait for the ambulance she was so hysterical she asked one of our neighbors to drive us to the hospital, the guy just blanked her......

DeleteQuite common, happened to my uncle in Atlanta and no one noticed till a friend of his called the cops because he was trying to reach him for days. Lining alone is really lonely, he was in his 60s. Sad!

DeleteBia Patt Ogar, always distinguish between Queen Amy and Amy alone. That aside, Stella it happens even in Lagos here. There are some areas that no one knows who his/her neighbour is on. For my area, if I stay indoors for donkey years, my neighbours no de no because everyone de do 'mind your biz' living. That is how lagos and I believe some parts of other cities are. These days, most pple mind their biz and don't care much about the next person. Not too good, but na wetin we grow up meet be that.

Shut your stupid myopic mouth..... Oyibos are not busybodies like u Africans.... If u live abroad u will know it is possible.... I live in a block of flat in London and I don't know all the other tenants in my floor.... Sometimes I take the lift for two days and don't see any other human..... People just mind their business which is not always good sometimes.... And it's obvious she had not family or was enstranged from them....

So who took her car? Who has been paying the rent for 6yrs? The LL didn't try to replace her with another tenant for 6yrs? It doesn't add up to me - such a lonely and boring way to die. Bad1
ReplyDeleteWell the flat is possibly hers? At such age she by law she wouldn't be paying for rent and if she hadn't finished paying her mortgage its written off. That's how the society works.

That's why I miss my growing up days on campus. Everyone knew practically everyone. You can even describe someone living as far as 20 streets away from you cos everyone was their brother's keeper. But this new life in lagos na keep to yourself. Wetin man go do naa. Any day my neighbour sees me outside, he always thinks I travelled and just came back. Smh.

Mon Ami, yours na small, Mine happened in Germany, A town called Heidenham. It was snowing and I was walking down the street. Saw an old woman who suddenly slipped and fell. Went to give her a helping hand and to my surprise she refused my hand and when I said sorry to her she question why I should say sorry to her and if it was I that made her fall..They always stay alone in diaspora and they die like chicken during the cold especially the old ones among them.

Some people actually outlive their children, nobody knows her story. Stories like this should remind us to take a moment to enquire on those who are without friends or family.

ReplyDeletePerhaps she never intended to be lonely and die that way, people can be very horrible sometimes especially ones you keep close to yourselves in the name of relatives. Life might have taught her very hard lessons which made her scared of human contact, she might have raised some ungrateful kids that grew up and decided to live their own lives because they suddenly realised their mother was not perfect or helped lot of her loved ones who in turn deserted her later in life! I reside in both London & Durham and I don't even know or give a damn who my neighbours are & aside from the people in my close circle; my nuclear & a bit of extended family & very few friends, I don't wish to get too familiar with anybody else, all charity work & contributions are done far away to strangers whom I wouldn't expect anything such as loyalty in return not people around that would end up stabbing you in the back!
