Street Trading In Lagos.

Last week Governor Ambode of Lagos state directed the Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and other Special Offences to carry out full enforcement ofthe law restricting street trading.

He also said street traders should sell their wares in the market and that if they continue to sell on the street, they will be arrested and prosecuted.

Unfortunately the Governor's word was mere talk that is not backed by action. As at last week and yesterday, the street traders are back at Iyana Ipaja.

No one has been arrested and prosecuted.

How will they relocate to the Market when they cannot afford shops there? Before dishing out orders like that, the governor needs to put certain things in place!

    1. Forget all dis talk... na wash. The task force officials collect bribe from touts so there's no way street trading will stop. These touts survive on the 100naira they collect daily from street traders. You need to see the way the chairmen of touts claim the streets like their fathers property, collecting huge sums of money from people to give them spaces.. smh. Naija I hail.

    2. Sentiments apart Stella...market women can be very stubborn. Even if they are given stalls you'll still see those that'll trade on the streets. Some who have stalls abandoned it to display their goods on the road, simply because they assume that customers will see them first before entering the main market. So in order to make sales quicker they turn their stalls to storage while they trade on the road. As for those who cannot afford to rent a store, the govt should strike a bargain with them that'll enable them pay instalmentally. Or they should wait till they can afford one. If Kai people seize their goods now, everyone will complain that they are being oppressed. Let's follow simple instructions abeg

    3. @SisiEko, no mind Stella, she is not aware of the mischief of these traders, they are as stubborn as the goats they sell!infact not just they, the average nigerian is usually very indisciplined, that if govt is not firm in taking and implementing any policy,it will fail but for Ambode as a governor,i don't see a very firm person in him, maybe I will be proven wrong with time cos lagos governance isn't for d lily livered.

    4. Do you guys know that those that sell their wares on the street pay for those spaces? Yes, they pay and they are also harassed by those touts in the market. Those traders are just being persecuted everywhere. It'd only God that keeps the poor in this country.

  4. Abeg they should free street traders who are hustling to make a living...

    1. Hustling to make a living by blocking roads and creating a venue for pick pockets to thrive?

Why should they being their wares to the road?
And the annoying thing is that if your leg mistakenly touch their wares, the living daylight will be cussed out of you.

Anyway, I can't wait for them to be sent packing from broad street and balogun street on Lagos Island.

    2. Exactly GBG!! They cause unnecessary traffic too.

    3. That island own is a nightmare, they display their wares on the pedestrian walk ways and roads.

    4. Madam GBG, they r so annoying we know but av you stopped to consider the fact that most of them can't afford any shop in the market?

      Delete
  5. You people should pity these traders na. Allow these people make an honest living for themselves, just help arrange them in such a way that they don't obstruct traffic. You know very well that most of dem can't afford to pay for those shops. Why didn't u build a simple complex like d one mimiko built being rented out at N2500 monthly ehn. Why na. Do u people want to drive these people to armed robbery and illegal ways of making money??? Rich men, pity poor men oh, if u drive dem away, u won't feed dem oh

  6. Dnt mind d governor, they will relocate to his residence to sell their goods. In a dense place like Lagos, he is dishing out such law. Hia!

    ReplyDelete
  7. People should stop patronizing those that sell by d road side. Giving those in the shops bad market.

    1. Aunty, not everyone can afford to rent a shop. In egbeda, shops are 450, 500 per annum. The cheapest shops in egbeda goes for 250 and that's mainland. Now tell me how much you think it wl cost on the island. My own is just that, instead of those jobless touts to be feeding on govt's property, the task force officials shoupd arrange the spaces in a way that won't affect traffic and all bills should be paid to the state govt.

  10. You dey mind them.
If only they know how many children have N40 noodles for dinner. Staple food is off the menu for so many families. See them in church on Sunday looking like hangers. Mtscheew. I pity this generation. The immunity level obviously poor. Thank God for goodies people share to the kids sections on Sundays.

If you dare cross Cele Bus stop along Apapa - Oshodi expressway at 6:30pm, trying to make a turn into the other side of Itire road, you will thiink it's Christmas. Goods everywhere. Reason? They can't afford shops, so they sell only in the evenings. The little kids at home must eat abeg.

    1. But the way these traders block d road especially in the evenings and night is very alarming...just come to jakande estate gate isolo from 4pm and see how they cause traffic there. To enter d estate na war because road side sellers and okada and keke peeps have taken over. The side walk were pedestrians take is lined up with all sorts of women selling food items too. Make d mistake of hitting one if the tray pans with ur leg and get d insult of ur life.

  12. Don't mind these fucks! How can you ask them to go to the market when there is no space there or even money to rent shops? The govt. is so insensitive to the plight of the people. Make somewhere available for them to sell their wares first before kicking them out of the streets.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I know it is for the good of the environment but most of this traders can't afford the shops so the govt should look for a way to help them.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Nah not right at all why does the government always deprive pple of their livelihood without providing provisions for them, these people can't pay for stores with the look of things

    ReplyDelete
  15. Street trading cannot be banned in this nation cos many people are below the poverty level.

    ReplyDelete
  16. They should make stores very cheap so that street trading will stop a little. how can you pay N160,000 for a small quiosk and you will be selling pure water, sweet etc how will they make ends meet.

Ambode should do something abut it.

  17. Which market self? the demolished Ladipo or which one?

  19. The rich governor sat down in his office to make a declaration. Lmao. Does he realise that this menace was in existence long before he assumed office. The question he should ask himself is what do I have to do differently in this dispensation to attack this problem. No be to just open mouth blow hot air.

  20. Abeg not all market shop de on a high side oo, me de inside market for egbeda na, standard shop oo with out in-build toilet is 2,500 - 3k u pay for one year , With in-build toilet is 5-6k, its even street shops that are on a very high side, they are making life unbearable for us wey de inside market cos ppl prefare to patronize them than coming inside market to buy.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thank you @ VIVA CIARA for that question.
Are they suppose to trade on the street?its bad that one cannot use the walk-way anymore all thanks to market womwn who now display their goods there . Putting Pedestrian at risk of walking on the road e.g Ketu and Obalende. Most of they can afford the small store/canter in the market but because they don want to pay for it and they also believe you get more customers on the road.

    ReplyDelete
  22. They aren't suppose to trade in the streets. Some shops in government owned market are ridiculously cheap. But they rather sell on the road making the road look like a Carol.

    ReplyDelete
  23. These traders should leave the streets.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Not to sound insensitive, these people are stubborn.
An example is Mushin. They were allocated space by the road side and were warned not to trade on the side walks.
In a bid to outshine one another due to the fact that most of them sell the same goods, they have overstepped their boundaries.
Go there now and see how messy it is. There's no space for pedestrians to move freely.
You stumble on their wares by mistake, you buy it. Plus curses as bonus.
I think these people are insatiable. That's all.

    1. My point precisely. Same thing I said. They are extremely stubborn. Some can afford a store but won't get one.

Tejuoso looks neat after he told dem to hang in d shops for d mean time. Osodi is beautiful after Fashola did that to them too. Iyana ipaja pple too will pass dat stage with time. God bless Nigeria.

  33. Reduce shop rents and they'll leave the streets. Government owned shop tho

    ReplyDelete
  34. Please which shop is expensive. The shops in Ikotun market go for between 2k- 15k depending on the location. It's a matter of cutting your coat na. Please Ambode drive them back to their village. I sell inside d market, I feel the effect of street trading on my biz. They don't even allow people come inside the market. The block all the entrances . heaven help you make you fall or kick their market. You will know the date your mum conceived you. Wicked people.
