Maltreatment Of MTN Call Center Agents At Mayfair Gardens

''Indians are here on Nigerian soil, slaving us and using our money to en-rich their lives. This must stop...''

I GOT THIS MAIL FROM AN AGGRIEVED MTN WORKER.

''I work as a customer care representative for Mtn Nigeria which was contracted for Communication Network Support Services Limited (CNSSL at Mayfair Garden Ibeju Lekki) we have always been told from the onset that we are not full staff of MTN Nigeria which we acknowledged but MTN has terminated the Contract CNSSL partly and now contracted it to a South African Indian company called ISON BPO. We've been maltreated badly.

The termination took effect on July 31st, we were re-issued another 3months contract letter from same CNSSL. before the termination of appointment, MTN who is the principal partner already sent a mail to all of us that our Unspent Leave days will be monetised. Gbenga Adebayo who is the CEO of CNSSL, paid nobody nothing and we have been working for 3years and (we have been confirmed as a full staff with letters), took up all our Unspent Leave days and cancelled them all. from August 1st to Oct 31st which the new contract states, we will not be going on Leave.

Those of us on Maternity Leave were asked to resume, even if u had the baby a day before or face been sacked I have a two weeks old baby and am working to support my family, so I can afford being sacked. But the stress is killing I leave home 4:20 everyday and get home close to midnight, except on night shift I can't even continue breastfeeding my baby, Our HMO has been cancelled. We were left with nothing after which he's sub contracting from ISON BPO for the period of 3 months (1st of August to 31st of October) We would be paid just our normal salary which is 75,367.05 Our work time has been unjustly increased from 5hours 20mins to 9hrs with one hour break which is unfair to us. This increase is only applicable to those in Mayfair Gardens, Ibeju Lekki, meanwhile most of us stay on the mainland, All other call centres (Apapa, Ikoyi, VGC), still run the normal shifts as usual. MTN has abandoned us and now we work like slaves. We can't talk because if we do we would be sacked, alot of people have been sacked unjustly. We're expected to pick calls and speak with 194 customers for the 9hrs. And for the night shift speak with 228 customers in 12hrs.

This is injustice.

While the stress is killing alot of us, we cant enjoy the free medical care because of the cancelled HMO. This is slavery I hope we would be saved from CNSSL/ISON BPO before its too late. This silence is long overdue and that is why I am sending this mail, Indians are here on Nigerian soil, slaving us and using our money to en-rich their lives. This must stop.

The MTN staff in south Africa recently protested for salary increment. We are not asking them for too much, all we ask for is our normal shift hours and for them to put an end to this madness''.

    1. Is only in Nigeria that foreigners come and assume that everyone should bow to them, they even move about with military personnels as escort that will flog and intimidate us Nigerians out of the road so their pig skinned people can pass which an African man can not do in their land. I just keep wondering if we are really independent.

This was exactly what Airtel did a few years back.
Moved call centre staff from CCSNL, HRIndexx and Bezaleel which were Nigerian owned and run, and moved them to this same Ison BPO and Tech Mahindra, another Indian owned company.

The difference was that Airtel agreed to pay off all the call centre staff who didn't want to move to the new companies and locations.

Now it's the turn of MTN. I don't know why NCC and NLC cannot look into all these issues. These Indian companies always make people work extra for less pay, cos they have poverty mentality, even if they have millions, 3 of them will still share a bottle of coke.
I've worked with them in Naija, Asia and Middle East and they are all the same everywhere

God help us not to sell our birthright in our very own motherland.

    3. Yours is better as u receive close to 76.000. M a Graduate, completed NYSC and got a job unfortunately in an Indian Company, we work our asses for them, their monthly reward as a company runs into hundreds of millions, but here I am as a bsc holder with salary of less than 45k. Who am I to complain to. U see our advert in all the TV stations News. U can never see a foreigner there on Tv. These guys Friday allowances runs into Hundreds of thousands apart from their fuelling allowance... This nonsense has to stop..... The FG should look into the welfare of Nigerian "Supposed" Workers. Meanwhile these guys are not paid their salaries in our Nigerian account, it Goes Straight to their Indian banks to enrich their country.... Getting off this place by God's grace bcz I can't work hard n at the end of the month Cry to the Bank. May God Save all Nigerians working under these Devils. AMEN.

On a normal ground who would do this kind of job if not for the high rate of unemployment in this country

We don't have corporate social responsibility laws in Nigeria but these foreign companies do but don't adhere to them because they are in a lawless society. It's sad really, and the saddest part, Nigerians treat these foreigners like demigods, when in their countries, they don't get a second look. Bull crap!!!

This is true, my dear it's not only in MAY fair, apapa are starting theirs on Monday. The way they outsource it's terrible. After working with them with 5 good years. And now they want to lay off without any compensation. It's either you move with them to ib or abk or resign. They treat us like shits. The only dept that face the crowd with insults and meets their target is this customer care, yet we gain nothing. Yearly profit sharing we don't get. No gifts at the end of the year.
At least working for a company for 5yrs, you should be bold of something tangible or bn promoted or increase in salary, no be like dat for mtn, they keep increasing working hours and reducing salary every year. Our salary from SA is supposed to be #250k, but outsourcing to different coy now makes it less than 100k. People can't talk cos of fear of unknown. Most bloggers refused to publish this issue cos they collect advert money from mtn. Wo nos mayb dey can trace me and wat next. Na Nigerians they kill each other people. Ncc and NLC should please look into this issue. God bless you Stella for publishing this.

    3. Yes you are very correct dear.we in apapa are at home now.MTN threatened us to resign, and the so-called ison bpo guys are owing us for 2 months now.
MTN didn't want to listen to us instead threatening us to bring their ID Cards and Headsets.
MTN doesn't even care we have not been played our shortpay and the ISON HR guys are not picking their calls.my dear its terrible but justice will take place!!!!

  31. I agree with the above, as i am also a ccr here at Mayfair Gardens, but i would like to clarify something. The maltreatment is not from ISON BPO. It is from Gbenga Adebayo himself. Information is being hidden from the ISON staff here in Mayfair Gardens. Team leads has been threatened not to speak to any ISON staff, for fear that they might find out the real deal on how we are being treated and use it against them. Anyone seen with them would be automatically dismissed. We need HELP from the sharp claws of Gbenga Adebayo and we demand that our unused leave and also days we worked on public holiday, be monetized. Thank you for sharing this @stelladimokokorkus

  37. I beg to disagree. No why should I beg? I totally and vehemently disagree with comments I'm seeing here. We are where we are in this country because we choose the teart symptoms rather than cause. You say Lebanese and Indians can't practice what they do here in foreign countries and it is true. Question is, do the lose such characteristics when they vo elsesewhere? No. The answer is those ppl don't let them and I mean those in authority o er there. Look their no Indian company registers without a Nigerian. None without a Nigerian director and tip management staff. Let it be known that Nigerians are the ones that fix the salaries and conditions. Nigerians are the ones that tell them that nothing will happen and ppl will take the offers. Even when some of them give better conditions, their Nigerian managers protest that its too much. Some go even to the MDS and tell them that so so and managers are wasting their money giving outrageous incentives. These managers go on to collect as they like. Indians almost always get workers through what I call hand to hand and they always ask the manager or director bringing somebody how much they suggest as pay. Finally, the Nigerian police favours and protects them because the nigerian big man whose duty it is to formulate and implement gets heavily settled. So let our ppl help us then indians and other Asians will behave. Nigerian managers in European and american companies here also do the same only that these other ppl have a higher level of humanity and legality coming from their homes. I have seen cases the nigerian manager fought to shortchange his fellow nigerians to such and extent the expatrialte exclaim I surrender and turn around to the cheated and malteated staff members and tell them well its your brother

Thank God the contract was not renewed after a lady collapsed while on duty. In fact I learnt that about 3 people collapsed. MTN is okay. The problem is with the vendors. Phillips Consulting is one good vendor MTN used at a point.

  64. The onus is not on MTN, you're not their staff. It's on CCNSL/Gbenga Adebayo. MTN paid his as a client, you were in his employment working on an MTN project. Please face the man, sue him to court if you have to but really MTN has nothing to do here based on what you have said.

It's a fellow Nigerian who has mistreated you & then sold you off to Indians for less. Typical situation in many call centres though. At least you take home over 50k. Other call centers take less than 40k home with no benefits either.

  74. We must put a stop to this gently or aggressively. Even the so called Gbenga Adebayo, the GCEO of CNSSL is a big thief and a fool. He's presently making a kind of alliance with the Indians the more to further enslave people in all mtn call centers including Ilorin call center. Am we are going to burn their call centers into ashes very soon. I swear we will do that if necessary solution is not being proffered.

  77. I had to bring my comment on another thread here... Lets speak out! #MTNSLAVERY

We Nigerian youtth don't get bothered about issues until the thing reach our neck! I just dey observe dey read all this post before, but as e dey affect me, make me sef put mouth.
The genesis of all this wahala started from this attached email from the MTN CEO himself. None of us enter nairaland or shouted nay protest then.
I really don't know what we did wrong that MTN just decided to handover 6,000 youths as slaves to ISON, an Indian Frim with no major history locally. The same ISON was SPANCO that caused Airtel's downfall.

CNSSL to me, don try as a local firm. I won't say the job was the best but no other outsourced CCR job from airtel to glo had better offer like CNSSL. Even though I wanted more, I know where I was before I started this job and where I dey now. I get time do my side runs and even plenty of us buy car and also marry for here.

Even if we want to protest, CNSSL is not the center of this if you ask me. The MTN CEO said from August 1, 2015 there'll be a smooth transition. The 3 months contract we sign, no be the transition be that? The 10.00am-7.00pm shift, no be transition be that? I'm sure they plan to sack us all and get Mayfair out of the equation or offer lower pay sef!

As for me, I advise we all put it more as #MTNSLAVERY than to burn our own CNSSL down. CNSSL give me job, MTN wreck am.

You can see a picture of the exact email here: https://static.dyp.im/R0Kwh8Q1Ef/7cd89170d2bf540f666cf7ddca6ac82a.png

    1. @bovi101, I quite disagree with you on this and this has gone to show that you don't work at Mayfair Garden. The letters that was supposed to distributed from ISON which was given to those in Apapa, Aromire and vgc was were intercepted and altered by Gbenga Adebayo (CNSSL). And that is why ccrs in Mayfair Garden work the new crazy shift and ccrs in other centres still maintain the old shift as mtn has stated in the mail sent from Mike Ipoki.

So Gbenga Adebayo is the real problem here. Let someone appeal to him to pay the staffs public holiday allowances and also their pension and leave allowance.

  78. If we are to fight, i believe its better we fight smart. @anonymous, I think your issue here is about money and not "the main cause of our job loss". You might just be the kind that will settle out for any side without any deep thinking. If you want to ask further make enquiries first before laying claims of the diverted letter thing. The man, engineer adebayo has had several open house meeting's with us and you could have asked any more questions from Hr or Ayo. I believe and agree with @bovi101's point.... if all was okay before June 30, and we could get competitive pay when due, without delay up until the move by MTN, why then go against people that made it work instead of the main cause? We don't think smart before we react. These Indians have all to gain and MTN sef won't budge a bit to losing us all... not us going against those who made things work in the first place. I also had questions about the leave allowance till some friends and team leads explain our situation. MTN no wan send us for mayfair at all.... Make that Ugonwa lady explain her mail about allowances well and i'm also sure MTN people would surely know If the poor man chop our money. Make we face our battle correctly abeg. I dey go sleep.... I dey morning duty tomorrow abeg..

  86. We should stop sounding like gbenga is our problem. We all talk like it's been like this for long. We have worked here for about 3years and we forget it wasn't like this till August 1st. We should talk like smart Nigerians and not hungry dumb people. The issue here is a south african MTN allowing an indian ISON take over. If we could stay with CNSSL for 3 years without resigning why shout as if it's the man that cause our plight? We blame CNSSL and forget we are not MTN staffs but CNSSL, who gets the contact from MTN. MTN changed the tune by allowing these Indians come in. We all go suffer for these ISON hand because the HMO, Staff bus, 75k Gbenga is paying us is not appreciated now, but when these Indians rake over fully a lot of us will be forced go to Abeokuta, Ibadan, or akure for 30k, no HMO, no staff bus.... no place to speak out. Then our eyes go clear well. Why blame the man like say he no try for una? Let's speak out the truth here abeg.... I wish we protest and get the Indians out, and then we can surely discuss issues with Mr adevayo at our meetings as we have always done instead of coming here to bad mouth out own and not fave the main cause. We haven't even finished a month under these ISON arrangement we are compalingi and forgotten the past 3 years. SHIO! A lot of us have undergone so expensive treatments that HMOs don't cover paid by CNSSL... Working hours were not this bad. Why forget all these so soon. Guys WINTER IS COMING with ISON. The WHITE WALKERS are here... we should unite and talk them out of here. Be wise.

  88. It's now I believe we have a serious issue with the CEO of CNSSL.
Have never heard it that companies pay staff their leave allowance beginning of the year from what our Oga just mentioned today in a mail dated 21st July 2015. or what's today's date please?

He claimed he already paid our leave of this year at the beginning of this year! I accept? What now happened to last year's leave allowance? meaning we are still owed one year leave allowance.

Am sure they didn't read the memo sent before they blew it to everyone.

The memo said a valedictory service was held on the 31th of July 2015, where you hed a meeting with the Team Leads but what I can't seem to comprehend is how the mail was sent 21st July 2015 seem to carry a meeting done on the 31st July?

This is pure scam... looting of the highest order...
