Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has called on the Federal Government to intervene and address the allegation that the owner of Dangote Refinery, Aliko Dangote is planning to force newly hired drivers to sign contracts that restrain them from joining established unions within the oil and gas sector.


 Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Dingyadi, has summoned the management of Dangote group and the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, to an emergency meeting today, in a frantic effort to halt the planned nationwide strike over alleged anti-union policy, among others.

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of ‘acting like a terrorist organisation, following an attack on its members at a church premises in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State last week. The gathering was attended by party leaders, including Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, who formally declared his membership of the opposition party.

. Kano State Police Command has warned the general public, particularly road users, that the Yaryasa Bridge in Tudun Wada Local Government Area has collapsed due to heavy rainfall. In a statement issued by the Kano State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the bridge serves as a critical link between Kano State and other states, including Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, and the eastern part of the country.

They made the demand, following the bold steps taken by several states across the country, to increase minimum wage of their workers above the N70,000 benchmark, in response to the prevailing economic realities.

 The Kiriksamma Local Government Council of Jigawa State has confirmed the death of one person and seven others injured in a building collapse that occurred in the area. The council’s Information Officer, Musa Muhammad, confirmed the incident in a statement in Dutse on Sunday.

 The Police command in Jigawa has arrested 13 suspected drug peddlers in coordinated raids across five Local Government Areas of the state. Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu, disclosed this in a statement issued in Dutse on Sunday. Shiisu said the arrests followed credible intelligence reports and subsequent raids on identified criminal hideouts within the affected areas.

 The Nigerian Army’s 12 Brigade Lokoja says it has recorded major successes in its ongoing Operation EGWUA A TITE II in Kogi. The Brigade’s spokesperson, Lt. Hassan Abdullahi, said in a statement on Sunday that notorious bandit commander, Kachalla Bala, and five others were neutralised on Friday, September 5th.

 The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has recovered 653kg of Colorado and Loud, a strong strain of cannabis sativa in Lagos and Abuja raids respectively. Mr Femi Babafemi, Director, Media and Advocacy, NDELA said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja. He said in Abuja, NDLEA operatives on a stop and search operation on Thursday, September 4 arrested a dispatch rider.

The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has decried the state of security in the country.
In a post on his official X handle on Sunday, Obi said Nigeria is bleeding, calling for declaration of state of emergency on insecurity.

An Egyptian national, Mohammed Saleh, 56, has died after reportedly slumping during dinner at the Abuja Intercontinental Hotel, Wuse Zone 4, on Friday night.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that Saleh was dining with three companions when the incident occurred.
The hotel’s Security Supervisor, Francis Yusuf, promptly reported the case to the Wuse Division Police around 9:24 p.m.
“The victim was immediately rushed to Kings Care Hospital, Wuse Zone 4, and later referred to Wuse District Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. The body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy,” the sources said.
Police have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
