A coastal bus stopped abruptly due to a fault at the bridge.
Within a twinkling of an eye, some group of boys forcefully opened the door of the vehicle and began to rob the passengers. They collected phones and money. Resistance from some passengers were met with a knife stab according to a victim that narrated the ugly incident.
That wasn't the first time such robbery incident had occurred in that spot and if proactive security measures aren't put in place, such criminal activities on that axis won't come to a stop. There have been several calls from people on radio programme on the government to act on this now but it seems all that keeps falling on deaf ears.
On Wednesday I passed that route around 7pm and saw a young man in a pool of blood wriggling in pains. The driver in the vehicle I was hit the break pedal and flashed his light on him. I saw him clearly. A wheelbarrow pusher stood closer to him. Probably the goods on the wheelbarrow belongs to him. He had been stabbed it the stomach and robbed. With one of his hands, he covered the wounded part of his body still gushing out blood. I almost shed tears. He could have been anyone's brother.
The wheelbarrow pusher was calling for help from passersby. I pray he survives this. In our quest to make a living, may we never stop living.
Going out on the daily and returning in one piece is a miracle that shouldn't be taken for granted.
The government of Rivers State need to act decisively now. There should be a high power solar light and CCTV installed on that bridge down to Oil Mill Elelenwo. A military checkpoint should be stationed as well at the mentioned axis to wade off these criminals.

Eleme junction is a no no at night
ReplyDeleteStop there at your own risk
Everyone hopes help comes for another yet no one wants to make the effort to help. Those that stop at scenes will be busy taking pictures or making videos instead of trying to help. Your driver will have stopped since he had passagers and seeing that the robbers will have left.
ReplyDeleteMay Nigeria not happen to us or our loved ones 🙏.
My heart goes out to that young man; no one should have to experience such horror just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.Infact from the North to the South, nowhere feels truly safe anymore. Ya Allah 🤲 we pray for peace.
ReplyDeleteIt is sad how some young ppl use their lives to destroy instead of creating goodness on earth. To address these problems would require the removal of certain belief systems that are strongly in place. Poverty does not put a knife in someone’s hand and tell them to rain death blows on someone else for few little things they have on them.
ReplyDeleteOh dear Lord! Nobody stopped to help!
ReplyDeleteI pray he got help ooo
What i dont understand is why d people dont form communities wit a chairman n then collect money to put d solar on d bridge. Why keep waiting for a gov. Who does nothing.
DeleteYou see under that particular bridge at Eleme junction is an abode for different kind of bad people.
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrible situation for that young man. Police should identify the hot area for all the criminals activities and increase their presence there.
