This is beautiful. And you’re right — parenting isn’t a sprint. It’s a long, unending run where the rules keep changing, the finish line keeps shifting, and still, parents show up, even when they’re tired in places no one can see.
ReplyDeleteWe watched our parents do this without really understanding it. We didn’t have the language for the weight they carried. Now, looking back, the sacrifice feels almost impossible to measure. Some people grow up held by it. Some don’t. And even among partners, that effort often goes unseen — or worse, taken for granted, boxed into rigid expectations that leave little room for appreciation or gratitude.
Adding to your “Imagine”:
Imagine developing sharp, almost instinctive focus — finding a missing shoe in seconds while the clock is already against you and where you're going.
Imagine calmly explaining, for the fifth time, why this isn’t that, and why that isn’t this — and meaning it with patience.
Imagine loving someone so deeply that your whole heart feels like it’s walking around outside your body.
Imagine carrying the quiet responsibility of shaping a life, and still showing up every day, no matter how heavy things feel.
Imagine giving up pieces of yourself — your time, your ease, even parts of your dreams — without announcing it, just so someone else can have a better start.
Imagine being everything at once: the safe place, the guide, the provider, the shield, even on days you feel like you’re barely holding together.
Imagine holding onto small wins like they’re gold, because to you, they truly are.
Imagine the constant, mental gymnastics of worry craddled by fear — about their safety, their future — in a world that doesn’t always feel kind.
And then imagine doing all of that quietly. No applause. No real pause. No manual to follow. Yet somewhere along the way, someone reduces it, dismisses it, or measures it only by their entitled expectations or monetary value — as if everything else doesn’t count.
Parents deserve more than praise in passing. They deserve to be seen, properly and consistently. Because parenting isn’t a role you clock in and out of. It’s a life you live, every single day.
